La Vita Spuntini
Byres Road Italian with a twist, offering a tempting array of small dishes cooked to order at a very reasonable price.
This candle-lit restaurant, with its large windows overlooking bustling Byres road and Romanesque décor certainly has a romantic, Mediterranean feel. An imposing lion’s head-shaped pizza oven is the most eye-catching of the ornate pieces that dominate the interior, and is the central point in the production of the cute little pizzas the restaurant is famed for. These, officially named pizzette, offer the indecisive diner the opportunity to mix and match. The gloriously fluffy 5-inch pizzette, covered in melting mozzarella, spicy sausage and meatballs, are designed to be paired with a couple of the little plates of specialist Italian foods also on offer. Try the incredibly luxurious buratta – hand-tied mozzarella (specially imported from Italy each week), such is its creaminess it’s best described as akin to a savoury ice-cream – or parmesan-laden polenta chips. If you choose pasta, expect a generous bowl of al dente linguine, perhaps one swathed in a creamy white wine sauce, hiding a mild heat from chilli and studded with king prawns. A quirky yet classic take on Italian cuisine.
