Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2019 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

Candles, soft lighting and a piano player give this neighbourhood brasserie something of a posh hotel lobby atmosphere. The service is warm and informal though, and a mainly local and family clientele mean the place is actually quite relaxed. The menu is concise and well balanced, many diners look no further than the excellent value two-course deal that runs all day, all week. Delving into the à la carte, a smoked haddock risotto is an indulgently rich and creamy dish with plenty of fish and a softly poached egg, served, as many dishes are, as a starter or main course. A special of rack of lamb comes nicely pink and juicy if requested, with glistening honeyed root veg, spring onion mash and rosemary gravy. Baked sea bass fillets are a refreshingly light dish but with wonderfully complex flavours – a generous portion of fish with firm flesh and a crisp skin sits on a delicate salad of fennel, orange and spring onion. This dish bodes well for the neighbouring ‘Surf n Turf’ sister venue. Children are welcome all night if dining and a special menu caters for them.
