Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2019/20 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

Italian food is Glasgow’s favourite food. It must be, what with all those lunch and pre-theatre deals, Neopolitan pizza places, and old-fashioned places with gingham tableclothes, plus the upmarket high street affairs. And there are the family businesses that have expanded around the city, such as Amore, with a central venue and a more recent East End. The original has a gorgeous spot looking down on Merchant City, elevated from the traffic, and with a delightful little outdoor area. Restaurants in this part of town work best when they feel a wee bit special yet still welcome all. Amore does this with gusto. An expansive menu moves all around Italy, with familiar pastas and sauces sitting alongside pizzas, steaks and seafood. Mussels, calamari, nachos with Bolognese sauce — all Italian desires are covered for the steady stream of punters each evening. Big groups and family occasions work particularly well here. The food hits the right notes, too. Mozzarella in carrozza is a Southern Italian fried cheese sandwich, nicely crispy on the outside before oozing its filling onto a light, pulpy tomato sauce. The pollo dell ’Amore has a robust cream sauce with a little kick of booze, surrounding mushrooms, peas and broccoli all cooked with a pleasant crunch. Folk who like their pasta sauces big and packed with ingredients will be at home here. Risottos are generously portioned and satisfyingly rich as well. With its location, and its broad appeal, Amore does a jolly good job of keeping Glasgow well fed.

  • High point: The elevated outdoor seating
  • Low point: Menu is so big it can be bewildering
  • Notable dish: Mozzarella in Carrozza
  • Average price: £8.95 (Mon–Thu); £10.95 (Fri–Sun).; £19 (dinner)
