Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2019/20 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

Tucked below pavement level on a quiet Merchant City street, SoHo is steadily building a reputation for decent food at a good price. There's an extensive selection of small dishes that can work as starters or be combined in a tapas-style meal, with the bulk of the mains divided between pizza and pasta. Lamb pizzaiola has depth of flavour that speaks of long, slow cooking, and its wine and herb-rich sauce is punctuated by capers and olives. A circle of puffy, fresh-baked bread is perfect for mopping up the juices. Pasta sauces run from the traditional Bolognese and carbonara to rabbit ragu and wild mushroom with garlic, but with only two shapes on offer – spaghetti and penne – the section's appeal is limited. Pizzas, however, are a speciality, and rightly so; the bases are made with quality Italian 00 flour, and emerge from the stone oven thin and crisp-edged. Toppings include artichoke, parma ham, goat's cheese and Italian sausage. Portion sizes are extremely generous but it's worth saving space for dessert; home-made tiramisu and the house vanilla cheesecake are both recommended.
