Bay of Bengal
This review is taken from the 2011 edition.
Situated slap bang in tourist central on the Royal Mile, Bay of Bengal is well placed to attract passing trade. Established in 1978, it has recently given itself a modern makeover, replacing its dark reds and Indian fabrics with turquoise flock wallpaper and coloured lighting. The menu covers many familiar takes on Indian and Bangladeshi dishes from passanda to vindaloo, plus standard biriyani section and smattering of Thai dishes, while a 'green' menu caters for vegetarians. A wine list featuring the likes of Liebfraumilch and Mateus Rose suggests that it hasn’t changed since 1978, but it’s the bargain 'budget' menu, with a reasonable choice of basic dishes, that can see a queue out of the door at lunchtimes. Get the appetite going with poppadums and accompaniments or start off with pakora or kebab before tucking into straight-up chicken korma or lamb methi gosht. Round it off with a traditional Indian dessert, or cleanse the palette with some good old ice cream.
- High point: Bargain menu during the day
- Low point: Not such a bargain otherwise
Bay of Bengal Indian Restaurant Edinburgh is often known as the best restaurant in High Street for serving top quality food since 1978.
Our menu offers traditional exotic Indian, Bangladeshi, Vegetarian, Halal and Thai dishes with an experienced top chef's special recommendations for each selection. Some selected Thai dishes are now available.
Close to some of Edinburgh city centre's main Hotels (such as Radisson Hotel, Missoni Hotel, IBIS Hotel and Balmoral Hotel) and near to main sites of interest, Bay of Bengal is centrally situated next to the Festival Fringe Office between Edinburgh Castle at one end of the Royal Mile and Holyrood Palace at the other.
Party groups are particularly welcome and the venue is ideal for birthdays, anniversaries and office functions. Agency and party organisers are welcome. Lunch menus are now available and during the festival there is all day opening. Some tables are located outside in the Summer.
