No frills city centre joint offering authentic cuisine from across the Chinese provinces, with super friendly service
Hidden gem may be an over-used cliché, but it would be easy to make the big mistake of walking past China Blue, found up a narrow flight of stairs on Glasgow's heaving Hope Street. Once inside, the décor may be functional and the view is of the top of the Stagecoach No 6 grinding past, but the welcome is beaming and the laminated menu vast. Nominally Cantonese, the cuisine happily roams across all corners of China with excursions to Malyasia for sweet, nutty chicken curry and a sensationally creamy homemade soft tofu that will banish any notion of it as a bland protein. Tapas-style is the smartest way to order here, to appreciate the authentic complexity of regional flavours. Thousand chilli king prawn may be a slight exaggeration but it fizzes irresistibly on the tongue, water morning glory is stir-fried with funky dried shrimp and traditional, glossy-skinned 'hang up' duck is heavy on the bones but rewards efforts to hunt down the meat.
