Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2019/20 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

Situated in Portobello, Bonoful has successfully built a reputation among regulars, and as word spreads is attracting custom from further afield. With a pristine modern minimalist interior, the menu specialises in Bangladeshi food but also includes cuisine from other parts of India. The 'Handi' (the Bengali name for pot) is a great idea that offers diners a different dish of the chef’s choice each night from Thursday to Saturday. The most popular dishes will become a permanent fixture on the menu, such as kallo lamb: tender lamb with an impressive blend of spices and a good kick. The Bengali speciality of fish curry, with succulent marinated fish, is also a triumph. The mixed kebab starter is a simple dish perfectly cooked, but in contrast the vegetarian option of spicy cashew nut roll is disappointingly bland. There are many high points in this culinary experience but unfortunately the desserts are unremarkable. Worth a visit if you are in the Portobello area.
