Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2016 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the 2015 edition.

For a decade now, Asia Style in Charing Cross has been serving up authentic Chinese and Malaysian dishes in a simple no-frills canteen-style setting. The food is reliably good and ranges across the geographical styles – from Malaysian roti canai pancakes with spicy coconut sauce starters to classic Chinese dishes such as stir-fry vegetables in garlic sauce. First things first: the roti canai. It is one of those pleasure triple points – the balance between the fluffy-doughy centre, the crispy, oily outer shell and the light, spicy sauce. It gets the dopamine firing on all cylinders in the brain (but if that is too sciency just think Homer Simpson dreaming of donuts). Next up the mains, a duck with ginger is served with very little in the way of ceremony or apology to the little bird – big chunks of brown meat holding fast to snapped pieces of bone, smothered in a rich gingery gravy. But it is tasty nonetheless. The fast service, good prices (pancake £2.50) and the cities-of-the-world posters give the place a great backpacker holiday feel.
