Italian Kitchen
Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2016 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the 2015 edition.

Modern and sleek, the Italian Kitchen’s interior is more contemporary than the rustic name suggests. Stone, wood and stainless-steel furnishings set the tone for an efficient Italian eatery. Like the décor, the menu is modern but unpretentious. The use of first-rate ingredients allows the kitchen to offer popular choices such as pizza margherita alongside more specialist dishes such as pan-fried veal with equal confidence in their quality. The extensive pasta list is an area of particular achievement, with dishes varying from a simple spicy penne arrabbiata to an indulgent spaghetti loaded with king prawns, langoustine, crab, baby calamari and mussels, both served in silky smooth well-balanced sauces. The staff are slick and smart, their friendly and well-informed nature lends itself well to the restaurant’s metropolitan buzz. Floor to ceiling windows make gazing out at the hustle and bustle of Merchant City an added bonus. A tangy crêpe suzette served with Italian vanilla ice-cream is one of the highlights of the dessert menu. All courses are best accompanied with a glass of wine from the restaurant’s well-curated list. Staff are on hand to offer tasting notes or pairing recommendations, should you desire.
