Based in Canonmills and something of a local institution, Eastern Spices is secure in its good name with local curry-heads. This security can result in a little complacency on occasion, but when it’s good, Spices is very, very good. A starter of chana puree is a tart fusion of spice, chickpeas and lemon juice, and the range of mains is so vast as to be baffling at first. If in doubt, the ginger murgh makes a substantial and warming main course feast, but if you’re in the mood for something fierier then the jalfrezie is a particularly good combination of char-grilled chicken and dry, citrus heat.
