Jute Café Bar
Pretty much all things to all people in terms of Dundee’s social life, Jute is housed in the cultural quarter’s focus, the Dundee Contemporary Arts centre. The massive, airy and stylishly minimal bar area takes on a number of roles throughout the day, from chilled-out, kid-friendly café during the daylight hours to bustling and noisy style bar in the evenings. Despite having been an absolute mainstay of Dundee’s nightlife for a number of years, Jute somehow maintains a cutting-edge feel to it, the arty yet eclectic vibe of the place ensuring just about everyone feels at home here.
As the DCA changed the face of arts in Dundee, so the Jute Cafe Bar changed the culinary landscape. It manages to transform through the day, from a casual breakfast venue to a lunchtime favourite for business or pleasure, to an evening rendezvous for a sophisticated dinner. The menu has always been inventive, but there are additional twists on traditional breakfast dishes – chorizo, black pudding and chive omelette anyone? The outdoor space lends itself to lazy afternoons with a sharing platter.
