Ichiban has been offering city centre Japanese food since 1998 and in the west end since 2002. It's a straightforward noodle bar, offering bowls of soups, rice, bento boxes, sushi, teriyaki, tempura and kushiyaki. The satisfyingly healthy-feeling and fresh-tasting takeaway food comes promptly – in rather worryingly flimsy but solid enough containers. The chicken katsu curry consists of a fillet of quality breast deep-fried in panko breadcrumb, giving it a soft, moist meat and a crunchy, chunky coating though the curry sauce lacks bite. Chicken yakisoba comes with sliced chargrilled breast, stir-fried noodles, and vegetables, where good quality noodles with lovely meat makes a pleasantly simple noodle dish.
This review is taken from the 2015 edition.
Good-value, hearty bowls of noodles and well-prepared sushi have been drawing students and other West Enders to Ichiban in impressive numbers for years. As we go to press, however, the Partick restaurant is about to undergo a major makeover, with a greatly expanded menu which will include much more Chinese and other East Asian dishes alongside Japanese staples. To reflect the new direction, the restaurant will be renamed Ichiban Fusion. Expect continuity in the informal style and accessible pricing, whatever the new menu may bring.
