A good old Southside neighbourhood café with a cornucopia of gluten-free and vegan options alongside the standard North American menu.

Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2019/20 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

Well into its ninth decade and still thriving, this longstanding establishment has become the epitome of Southside’s family-friendly, neighbourhood eating. Situated on one of the main junctions in the area, Brooklyn Café is a focal point for locals looking for no-fuss familiar North American foods and a few Scottish staples. There is a plumpish breakfast section rife with egg, meat or salmon variations, and a lunchtime menu studded with famed US gems: ribs, burgers, mac n’ cheese, and wings. Vegetarians should not fret as there is a plentiful of non-meat options, and special gluten-free and vegan menus available on request. New and courageous specials tailored to people with alternative dietary preferences are frequently added – a vegetarian square sausage, for one – showing the staff is unafraid to step out of their comfort zone. And with an opulent dessert menu to boot, this modest café boasts a mighty menu.
