Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2018 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £7.95 (+p&p).

Stationed above the banks of the Water of Leith, Lancers Brasserie is a popular standby with Stockbridgers looking for a decent, if unchallenging, curry. The adequate mains choice is boosted by a more than usually extensive wine list chosen with a careful eye on the menu. Mains include a rather underseasoned ginger murgh chicken and a lean and tender lamb methi ghosh, although this too suffers from a lack of oomph (and fenugreek). Sabzi vegetarian side orders are better, with a sweet and fresh-tasting sag aloo a major improvement on the rather insipid mains, and among desserts a creamy and generous almond kulfi ends the meal on a high. The décor is not designed to foster intimacy, with lights turned up high over a sparse interior and car-dealership blinds festooning the large glass windows. Still, fresh-cut roses on the tables are a nice touch and in general presentation is impeccable, with staff well versed in their customers’ needs. Just not one for spice-fiends, perhaps.
