Ashoka West End
Part of the Ashoka group’s fourteen-strong citywide chain of restaurants, the West End branch in particular is a stalwart of the city's curry scene. Those with a late-night craving for a curry but an eat-at-home mentality can order delivery up to 10.30pm or collect until 11.30pm. The option of online ordering makes things handier still. All of the classic Punjabi dishes popular in the city's curryhouses can be found on the extensive menu, alongside some South Indian and even Himalayan dishes. Particular mention should be made of Ashoka’s delicious lamb desi, which is perfectly cooked to balance the flavours of the meat and the curry, while remaining mouthwateringly tender.
In a city with a richly spiced history in curry cuisine, the Ashoka chain (under the franchised auspices of the Harlequin Leisure Group) has stood proud with a presence here for over 40 years, which is about as long as longevity gets in Glasgow. While a common thread of dependable, mainstream and crowd-pleasing curries connects all the branches there are variations, particularly in age and appearance, ranging from the original West End venue (opened 1973) close to Kelvingrove Park to the most recent outpost at the Quay (opened 2006). In between those two, branches sprang up on the cool cobbles of Ashton Lane, in suburban Bearsden and in Muirend on the city’s Southside. Starters typically range from pakora (including the very popular haggis variety at most branches) and bhajis to the sweet and spicy chicken chaat drumsticks and big platters offering variety tasters. For mains, North Indian favourites rule (dhansaks, bhoonas, kormas, dopiazas) with the occasional dosa from South India or Himalayan hotpot making appearances at some branches. Tandoori grill selections are common and popular, offering meaty treats such as blackened, succulent lamb chops, lamb tikka and kebabs. There are a few non-curry options, too, joining the usual 'European' dishes typical of curryhouses, such as fish and chips or steak. Most branches only open in the evening – the exception being Ashton Lane, while all generally offer some good deals, whether for midweek dining or for takeaways.
