What is organic?

Organic food is produced using environmentally and animal friendly farming methods. No system of farming has higher animal welfare! Soils area kept healthy through natural methods of soil improvement such as crop rotation and planting clover, and GM and artificial pesticides and insecticides are largely avoided.

Organic is getting increasingly popular in Scotland; there’s a great range of businesses, large and small, supplying amazing organic food across the country. To make it easier for you to find these organic choices, Soil Association Scotland has been working with The List to identify these businesses on this, thanks to funding from the Community Food Fund.

Businesses listed under ‘Certified organic’ are audited by an independent certification body every year to monitor their compliance. For foods to be labelled as organic, at least 95% of the ingredients must come from organically produced plants and animals.
