The Week in wine: Gérard Bertrand Cabernet Sauvignon 2018

This week we sample an intricate red that sent us to blueberry heaven

Welcome to the sixth edition of our weekly wine column, in which we highlight a great bottle and let you know its price point, the story behind its winemakers and, most importantly, how it tastes. Whether you're a dyed-in-the-wool imbiber or looking to refine your palate with a diverse range of bottles, check back every week for a new review.

Take a step back from work, lie down on your settee and enjoy a glass of red. It's one of life's simple joys, a brief caesura to clear your head and let the evening draw to a satisfying close. Last night I was in need of a bottle that could help me decompress after a hard day. The dreich winter had turned sour with sleet battering against my window, my shift seemed to have lasted a lifetime, and an unfortunate encounter with some out of date tofu turned my dinner into a write-off.

A bottle of Gérard Bertrand Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 proved itself more than capable of adding some sunshine to my dreary mid-week slump. Refined in the terroirs of the Languedoc, this full-bodied red was bursting with complexity, its top note delivering a flood of blueberry before leaving an oaky aftertaste that didn't outstay its welcome.

I've tended to shy away from large-scale growers like Gérard Bertrand for these columns, preferring to highlight indie winemakers from across the globe, but there's an undeniable flair to Bertrand and their biodynamic wines that tickles my palate in all the right ways. The company have crafted a Cabernet Sauvignon that's finely balanced, deftly creating a wine that's flavoursome without overwhelming the senses. Drank in accompaniment with some vegan chocolate truffles, it was a decadent treat.

In other words, a glass of this was exactly what I needed. At a reasonable price point of £12.99 per bottle, it could be the relaxing tipple that brightens up your evening too.

The Gérard Bertrand Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 is available from Majestic Wines for £12.99.
