Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2013 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the current (2013) edition.

Chaophraya sits proudly on the corner of Nelson Mandela Place, holding the title of Europe’s largest Thai restaurant. Climbing the small stairway outside, opulence and grandeur awaits in this A-listed building. Enjoy a cocktail on the first floor before ascending the plush staircase and into the palatial surroundings of the restaurant with high ceilings, ornate furnishings and comfy seating. Scallops and black pudding are a good east meets west starter, while tempura king prawns are massive and meaty with the lightest of batter served with a punchy sweet chilli sauce. Mains include a wide variety of poultry, seafood and meat offerings, the massaman lamb is particularly good – tender nuggets of sweet lamb bound in a nutty sauce full of coconut, cinnamon, chillies and turmeric, diced potatoes and extra cashew nuts give texture and crunch. If you feel like splashing out, a private table for two sits on its own balcony, overlooking the entire dining room, a minimum spend of £200 is needed to secure this exclusive space.

  • High point: Interesting, well-executed dishes served in opulent surroundings
  • Low point: Service can be unattentive at times

Located in the heart of Glasgow in the iconic Townhouse building, Chaophraya is the new and exciting venue to hit Glasgow.

The venue is set over four floors featuring Palm Sugar bar and lounge, a la carte restaurant, Buddha balcony, VIP champagne and whisky bar and four exclusive private dining areas catering for all occasions.

Each private dining area has its own unique style, the largest being the Thai Royal ballroom seating up to 30 people.

The staff were pleasant and friendly, but the service was disappointing right from the start. The waiter came over to our table to take our drinks order, but walked away having only taken my partners order! This would have been a simple enough mistake to make if it wasn't just the two of us! Of the four drinks we ordered, three were wrong! The restaurant was seriously over crowded, with tables crammed too close together, giving it a claustrophobic feel and absolutely no intimacy for a romantic meal. We ordered the sharing platter for starter, which was listed on the menu as £10.95, but we later discovered that this was "per person", which was not clear on the menu so be warned! It certainly was NOT worth £22 both in terms of quality and quantity. My partner's main course arrived promptly, but they had gotten my order wrong. A 20 minute wait followed and in the interim I was presented with two further incorrect main courses, and at one point the waitress attempted to serve me the order of the couple sitting next to me!! This was really unfortunate as the main courses (when mine did finally arrive) were really lovely. However, by this point I had lost my appetite and my partner's meal was cold. When we asked to speak with the manager about this, we were not approached by the manager but another member of the waiting staff who apologised and promised to adjust our bill accordingly. However, when our bill did arrive no discount was applied (and to make matters worse we were hit with the surprise of a double charge for the starter - twice the price of my main course). When we queried this, not attempt was made on the part of the waiting staff to make this right. Upon leaving the restaurant we happened to pass the manager, with whom we discussed our disappointment. The manager was very apologetic and appeared extremely keen to compensate us in some way for this, taking our contact details and promising to get in touch. But disappointingly we have not yet received any contact and I am not particularly optimistic about this. All in, we paid £90 for a shared starter, two main courses, and reasonably priced bottle of wine. Not worth it. I will certainly not be returning.

Had a wonderful birthday party there last night. The building and rooms are beautiful and the staff helpful and attentive. Unfortunately they did mess up on the flowers that my daughter had organised to be given to me, and so I do hope they will send me these as promised in a day or two.
Overall highly recommend this as a wonderful evening out and the food is fantastic too!

Would highly recommend

from the moment you walk in you feel extremely welcome as the staff greet you with a traditional Thai greeting. The receptionist Gillian was extremely friendly, welcoming and helpful as when we walked in we were unsure were to go at first. She then seated us in the bar which is stunning, really had a great opulent feel to it.

Food was fantastic and enjoyed by all even though not everyone at our table was originally a fan of thai food. Service was very friendly. Could only improve on the timing but it in no way spoiled our night.

would definitely return. perfect restaurant for a special occasion.

Came here with some of the girls while shopping in Glasgow and had a fantastic time.

Several cocktails later in palm sugar we decided to go for something to eat and having never had Thai food was a little nervous. However, Suraya our waitress gave us a complete and informative guide to the menu.

The food was delicious and Suraya was just amazing.

Will be coming back very soon and get my husband to take me to the budda balcony for our anniversary!

What a fantastic experiece!!!! Was a bit worried after the first reviews but think people need to give chaophraya a chance especially since it was its first week.

Great welcome at reception and yummy cocktails in the lounge even spotted miss scotland on the table next to us with a cocktail! For which my girlfriend wasnt best pleased.

Where served by a lovely waitress called Tatiana who although not being Thai was efficient and very attentive and informative about the building and pointed out the owner of the company in the kitchen cooking and pointing out how she apparantly does thisa in all the new restaurants.

Food was amazing for starters we had the prawn tom yum and the haggis dumplings which at first I thought would be weird but they actually work! For mains had the spicy pork belly and the beef salad and wow when they say spicy they mean in it although my girlfriend did ask for hers less hot and it was accomodated. The maitre d suggestion of a zesty riesling was to die for with the food and what an eye opener as not a choice I would have made myself.

Enjoyed our meal and got a tour of the building with the maitre d and will be going back in a few weeks to organise a whisky tasting in their upstairs bar.

This place is fantastic. Was a bit worried about coming after some of the reviews but the service I received was fabulous, food was great and the building was great. The lamb curry was to die for. They must have been working hard ironing out some issues. Could not fault it and have booked the fabulous private dining area for a friends birthday.

After a recommendation from my friend, who has eaten at the Chaophraya in Leeds and said it was outstanding, when she came to visit at the weekend we decided to treat ourselves and eat there. The building and decor are fabulous and made a very good first impression however, like other diners have commeted, we had to wait long periods of time to order and for food arrive. Firstly, we seated ourselves outside as no one was there to do so when we arrived. We waited a good fifteen minutes and no one came to offer us menus of any kind so i had to get the attention of the Maitre'd to ask for some which still took time after i had done so. We placed a drinks order which took quite some time to arrive although a jug of water was brought to the table. When we ordered the maitre'd was very helpful with any questions about the menu, but again the food took a long time to arrive. The starters were faultless-they looked and tasted amazing. The wait for the mains, were no less than 45 minutes and the wait for the plates to serve the food on took so long that the food got cold so we had to start eating it. The plates to serve the food on didn't arrive till we had finished the mains and the neither did the rice we ordered to go with the main courses. We were told that this was because the chef had burnt the rice and had to redo it and then it had to brought down from the kitchen on the second floor. Nevertheless i told the waitress that we would not be paying for the rice because of it's delay. When we asked for the bill that also took a very long time, then when it came there were desserts, beers and coffes on there that we hadn't had so we had to send it back to be corrected. Overall, we were there 3 hours just having 2 starters followed by 4 mains-luckily we weren't under any time contsraints! Despite the slow service and the mix ups, the most important thing is that the food was beautiful! For that reason, i would recommend Chaophraya to my friends but i would also add not to expect excepitional service to match (in my opinion) the exceptional food!

This has the potential to be a great restaurant but only with a few tweaks and a bit more training.
The townhouse has always been a beautiful building and everything has been done to keep this so, it's perfectly furnished. due to being so well lit (though I can understand them wanting to show it off) and stark white the main dining room does seem to lack atmosphere.
We did have to ask for a drinks menu and we did have quite a wait to order, we watched another couple up and leave due to fact nobody had been near them for a gooed 20 minues. Eventually our order was taken after maybe 20/30 minutes but it was then another 20 or so minutes wait for our drinks and food, we also had to chase our drinks up twice.
The food and drinks were excellent and, I think, worth waiting for but for tghe prices charged and the type of venue, there shouldn't be such a substantial wait. We also ordered more drinks later on and again had to wait. We also had to wait on and chase up the bill. The management were appologetic (and don't get me wrong coming from a catering background I understand cocktails take time and new openings take a lot of work and effort but that's where intensive pre-opening training is vital) but it's the venue's first week and it's meant to be making it's grand first inpression and i'm sorry to say it fell a wee bit short of the mark.
I won't strike it off my list yet, everyone deserves a second chance and the food is excellent, so i'm sure the necessary improvements will be made to make a good visit a great one.

My friend and I popped in here on Sunday while out Shopping and I was completely blown away! The staff were very open and friendly and we felt immediately welcome from their Thai greeting "Sawasdee" (think I have spelt it correctly) it added a nice little touch to the over all feel. We were unsure whether to eat in the restaurant or bar however the reception staff were happy enough to take us on a tour of the building which is absolutely stunning! We opted to have a quick bite to eat in the "Palm Sugar" bar, the staff were very efficient and took excellent care of us. I was completely hooked on the place! When the food arrived it was amazing!!! The staff definately made a good suggestion there for us!

All in all I had a great lunch, and was made to feel extra special by the staff in the short space of time I was there. Keep up the good work guys we will definately be back!

I came to this restaurant on Monday evening and could honestly not fault it. The staff were very friendly and service was great.

The food is the best food I have tasted in a Thai restaurant. It felt like I was back in Thailand again, very authentic.

I would recommend this restaurant to everyone.

We got a guided tour of the building and the private dining areas are out of this world. Can't wait to get one booked.

I have also booked again for this weekend as I enjoyed it that much.

Dear Colacubes,

I am really sorry to hear of your negative experience.

Friday was our soft opening as was Saturday, this was to allow the staff to gain experience in all areas before opening for full trading on Sunday.

Vast improvements have been made already and on going training is in place to ensure our service is outstanding.

Please do not allow Friday to put you off booking Chaophraya in the future.

Food was great and the decor was lovely. So thats good.
What isnt good is the poor poor service. Nothing as bad as the service colacubes had by the sound of it. I know it only opened in the last few days but it has a LOT to learn quickly. Problems with ordering, drinks not arriving till after starters, empty plates taking 20mins to clear, coffees not arriving at all, the bill, etc. The staff were all very pleasant and apologetic but considering they outnumbered the patrons I wouldn't expect to be forgotten about which obviously happened.
The most annoying thing though was the maitre'd. A guy with a misplaced sense of importance and skill. I dont know if he knew the people he was swanning over but they were celebs in his eyes. We were completely ignored by him except when he saw us pouring our own wine and he gave it "oh i was just about to do that". He left staff to deal with any issues and offered no support or leadership.

SO all in all this place needs to improve fast or it will be empty. And that Maitre'd needs to sort himself out as people from glasgow wont put up with him.

First impressions were great; the decoration is amazing and the entire place is really gorgeously furnished! Seated quickly, though they took a little while to take our orders; there were a few mix-ups with drinks we hadn't ordered and taking food to the wrong table, but it wasn't hugely inconvenient. Food arrived in relatively good time -- we ordered off the vegetarian menu, so can't speak for the rest of it, but what we did have was delicious. Friendly staff, if a bit soft-spoken. Seemed like everyone was getting used to the place since it opened very recently, but overall a very nice dinner -- would eat there again!

First visit to Chaophraya in Glasgow, Excellent Thai /fusion food to die for, all set in a state of the art Oriental palace,Our waitress (Sureyya) was really helpfull and attentive , Even the manageress (Kirsty) made sure our night was perfect, 10 out of 10 from start to finish. Highly recommended.

1. colacubes8 Jul 2012, 4:15pm1 star Chaophraya Report

The decor is very grand and builds your hopes for what is to come. Unfortunately, Chaophraya fails to deliver. We were seated in the bar area to have a drink despite having told the host that we were ready to go straight to the restaurant. We then waited 20 minutes without anyone coming to take a drinks order. Once the drinks did arrive, it was another 20 minutes before we were shown to a table. Once we were in the restaurant, 3 different waitresses tried to take our order - revealing a lack of communication between staff. It was then 1 hour before the starter arrived. Once the starter was cleared from the table another waitress casually tried to drop in that they did not know which course we were on and in the end, our main did not arrive within the 3.5 hours that we were there! When we asked for the bill, it took 15minutes to bring and then it wasn't even our bill. Steer clear of this place unless you enjoy wasting almost 4 hours for the sake of 2 dumplings and a sticky sauce!
