The 2013 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).
This review is taken from the current (2013) edition.
Nanyang is run by May Lin and Chee Wei Pang, an upbeat couple with the express intention of bringing Malaysia’s diverse cuisine to an international market. An intention which, coupled with a white-box premises among the great glass towers of the Quartermile, might conjure the alarming impression of an airport-lobby restaurant, serving food that’s inoffensive at best. It’s a relief then to find that May Lin’s cooking is assured and delicious, and Chee Wei’s service is homely and relaxed. The menu shows off all the Malaysian favourites: sambal, rendang, laksa and a good selection of hawker street-market food. From this, the famous Char Kway Teow is a smoky jumble of wok-charred noodles, beansprouts and juicy prawns, while a more genteel Nyonya dish of Capitan chicken is a sophisticated balancing act; sweet with coconut, sour with tamarind. A new menu is planned, shifting emphasis away from the Pangs’ Chinese roots to include a broader scope of the myriad influences of the Malaysian kitchen. If it’s executed to the same standard, it will only give the place more appeal.

We didn't know what to expect, but were completely blown away. We had drinks and a three course meal with two bottles of House red wine. The kampung fried bean curd and pandan chicken for starters were amazing. The rendang beef and special dessert were absolutely beautiful. All of the service was excellent, absolutely top notch, Go there now.

I found out about Nanyang restaurant from a friend of mine and as Malaysian, I had to try it and judge it myself. I was shock to see the restaurant and its surrounding. It was situated in a lovely location and the restaurant was not your average Malaysian restaurant you see around the uk, it had class and a fine touch to it. I felt it was a good place to bring my friend that are so eager to try Malaysian food. But for me, it doesnt really matter how the restaurant looked, the food and the services was what I was looking forward to. It is run by a lovely and friendly couple and they are so welcoming. They really made me feel like home. I order the satay skewers as a started and my favourite CHAR KWAY TEOW as the main meal and I emphasise for it to be spicy! The satay was amazing, Love the sauce(I asked for more as I couldnt get enough of it) and the chicken was tender and tasty but I was looking forward for the main meal. I was blowned away on how the Char kway teow turned out. It was just as I expected, if not more. It was as spicy as I asked, and they were very generous with their propotion, especially with their prawns. I was totally satisfied with the meal and I wish I had some room for the dessert. I look forward in trying the dessert in my next visit and definitely their other meals on the menu. Highly recommend this place and thumbs up in promoting Malaysia and its food.

Given the very limited amount of Malaysian restaurants in Edinburgh, I was really looking forward to Nanyang opening. I tried it out shortly after it opened and was sadly quite disappointed. The menu/slogans etc indicated that it focused on being authentic but I found that wasn't quite the case. Although the food was reasonably tasty, it was definitely quite Europeanised. The pai ti starter was nothing like the picture (which is what it is supposed to be like) and the main course dishes lacked any spicy 'kick' to them. The coconut rice was more like just boiled rice and their special dessert's pastry was a bit hard. I did try it a second time to make sure that I wasn't wrong - tried a hawker dish, Penang Assam Laksa - and once again, it wasn't quite authentic. The food is still tasty but I think if it's authenticity you want, probably not the best place :(.
