The 2013 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).
This review is taken from the 2012 edition.
Situated in the heart of student-heavy South Clerk Street, this recent opening is a good choice for those in need of reasonably-priced classic café fare done well. The décor is still evolving behind the bright stack of teapots in the window: Starbucks it ain’t, and thank the lord for it. All the baking is homemade and the very reasonable priced afternoon tea lasts all day – £8 will furnish two of you with sandwiches, cakes, scones and coffee or tea on the side, though caution on the tea intake is advised as there aren't any toilets. Save room for sublimely fluffy pancakes with either bacon or freshly chopped bananas and maple syrup or scarf down a tasty soup. An unpretentious eaterie in which the eponymous Elaine makes a staunch effort to create a homely atmosphere, whether that be nattering on the state of the roads to weary travellers or nipping out to buy gluten-free bread for a coeliac customer.
- High point: Delish sticky pancakes
- Low point: No toilets
- Provides: Vegetarian options (at least ¼ main courses), Children's portions, Children's high chairs, Wheelchair access
- Music on stereo: Radio
- Capacity: 24

Fab cakes and great atmosphere- the kind of place you feel happy to linger for hours, and it's really reasonably priced. Love to go there on a Saturday morning to read a magazine and try the new cakes on offer!

Elaine's Cuppa Cake is the perfect haven to dive into for a relaxing break from the busy Newington Streets. The home-made cakes are absolutely to die for and the Rocky Road, carrot cake, coffee cake and caramel shortcake are particularly recommended. The rest of the menu also offers a huge amount of choice and everything I have tried has been fresh and extremely tasty. The staff are very friendly and always have time for you which makes this cosy cafe full of quirky teapots feel even more like home.

Elaine is always on a good mood and bakes the best cakes in town! And it doesn't cost a lung and a leg either! Even if the place is heavin', she'll always have time to stop for a wee blether. Try it and you'll never go anywhere else.

Very impressed with this little cafe. A great range of food, something to keep everyone happy, including some extremely fussy children. Prices reasonable, staff lovely, great coffee and fantastic pancakes! The owner has an arrangement to use the toilets in the (very nice, clean) pub next door at the moment, until she has one installed - staff there were friendly too so don't let this put you off. Highly recommended.

Lovely relaxing atmosphere with excellent and friendly service. Of course the cakes are the best and I always struggle to choose between caramel shortbread or carrot cake!!!!! All home made cakes are fabulous and produced to Elaine's high standards. However, whats even better are the prices!!!! Very affordable for the quality of produce served. Well worth a visit !!!

Definitely one of the most atmospheric places in Edinburgh! It Quickly became my routine stop for a coffee and lunch. The home baked cakes are all amazing and the shortbread is a "must try"! The staff is always there for a chat and the service is simply great.

I love Elaines Cuppa Cake! The cakes are so good! My favourite cake is either the carrot cake or gingerbread cake! Perfect every time. The staff are very friendly and I always have a good chat with them. I go here twice a week on average and it never fails! Reading the review above I do not find having no toilet a problem as there are some around the corner at the meadows!

Pleasant atmosphere, good service and great cakes... all spoilt by the lack of a customer toilet!
