This semi-subterranean family-run café is proving a worthwhile destination for nearby workers and shoppers coming in for a variety of sandwiches, paninis, soups and fajita wraps, plus more hearty offerings of burgers, several classic pasta dishes and mains such as haddock and chips and gammon – all fresh and home-made, and competitively priced given the central location. Occupying the former Henry Healy shop, the café has been extended to create a separate sit-in area away from the bustle of the takeaway counter, with tables waited on by cheery uniformed staff. The whole place has had an impressive refurbishment, and the smart ambience, with soft tones of cream and brown creates a pleasant place to escape the choked streets beyond. The 6.30am opening means it is also a great spot for a good-value breakfast or roll and coffee for those unfortunate earlybird workers.
