Italian Kitchen
Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2013 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the current (2013) edition.

Stockbridge is lucky: it has it all. Good bars, interesting restaurants and plenty of well-heeled folk to fill them. The Italian Kitchen is a long-serving member of this community, where staff seem to know everyone – and if they don’t then they’ll treat you like they do anyway. Italian restaurants in the UK are not usually noted for their bravery and willingness to test an audience, but here offal and unusual cuts of meat are being served, alongside some more usual suspects. The kitchen’s success is evident in dishes like the game penne, where the richness of the meat marries well with a lighter sauce. Pizzas are also excellent, light and thin with well-judged toppings. The wine list is short and safe, but the wines are priced reasonably and give enough variety to show off the food. Puddings hit the usual Italian restaurant marks, a pleasingly boozy tiramisu and an unusually light zabaglione nicely ending a room full of celebratory, romantic and enjoyable meals.

  • High point: Daring dishes and interesting presentation
  • Low point: Some combinations don't quite hit the mark
  • Number of wines sold by the glass: 10
  • Provides: Children's portions, Children's high chairs, Free wi-fi
  • Music on stereo: Easy listening
  • Capacity: 35-40
  • Largest group: 35
  • House wine: £13.95 per bottle

Agree with mary's review on our night out. This is becoming my regular local dropin place. A special night out, a date or a quick plate of pasta, always satisfied with their food.

Definately worth a trip here for the difference in quality with other Italian restaurants in Edinburgh. I see they have been awarded a plaque for being a real Italian restaurant from the Italian embassy. I was her with some frioends and ate the home made ravioli with fava beans and was not disappointed. a definate place that I will be back to soon. Lovely young Roman waiter not the only thing I would go back for!!!

This is going to become my local favorite restaurant. Homemade ravioli, followed by fish stew as good as any bouillabaisse i`ve had in France, Armstrong in Stockbridge is their supplier (I had to ask) and homemade ice cream washed down by a nice Pinot Grigio made it a memorable meal

A lovely night was had by all of us. Wondering why this establishment never been checked by the List then I saw on saturday that it was hitlisted. (just website not up to date). An excellent venison fillet with special potatoes and a fish soup/stew that shouted beach dining. Ice cream was excellent too.

I arrived in Edinburgh Friday night and after settling into my hotel on the Royal Mile, made my way around town on foot with my wife in tow.
I made my way to the part of town called Stockbridge which is like a town within the City Centre to attend a meeting. It was with great delight, both of us ate at this restaurant, after having it recomended by our associate. The service was laid back but suitable for the atmosphere , but the food was outstanding. We both had pasta to start followed by the rack of lamb and the steak then homemade ice cream. Finished of a lovely day in Edinburgh. Back to London the day after.

I went here on the offchance after reading online reviews. My friend wanted to eat Italian and this looked the place. I was surprised that all the staff spoke italian too, believe me this is unusual in Italian restaurants in Edinburgh now where lots of the chefs are East European.
The reviews proved valuable, ate the homemade ravioli which were deliscious and then a chocolate mousse which just melted in the mouth.
My friends pizza was top class with rocket and parma ham and parmesan shavings, followed by home made vanilla ice cream. We will be back when feeling hungrier.Great

had to go back this was my second visit and wanted to see if kept up the standard. They do . ravioli, ice cream all homemade and the difference is in the taste. freshness and intelligent use of seasonal ingredients shows. `Nduja pasta is one i had never had before and it was excellent. wild garlic and wild leak risotto ate by my office colleagues also highly praised.

I'd tried one of their ready made dishes, from their stall in the Stockbridge Sunday market, and wanted to see what the restaurant was like. On a Saturday night it was full with a happy buzzy atmosphere.

We had a very good meal, with the stand-out dishes being the prawns starter, the thick pork chop, and the broccoli. The pasta dishes were light and freshly made, although with a tangy tomato sauce which wasn't always necessary with the other subtler flavours.

A good choice of Italian wines and spirits, friendly helpful service, and a number of other dishes which I'd like to try. So I'll be back.

Excellent local Italian. The standard pizza and pasta are good and don't taste like generic products. The prawns and the asparagus are particularly good starters. Last time I was there one of the party raved about their four cheese ravioli and the Hare Papardelle was fantastic. They've currently a midweek offer of a pasta a pizza and a bottle of house wine for £20. With the aforementioned starters that totalled £30 - better by quality and price than the packed Pizza Express across the road. The menu says the fish and meat are sourced locally - Armstrongs and Bowers of Stockbridge respectively.

Popped in last night for a walk-by meal. There's an eclectic menu pretty much covering al possible bases, with all selections featuring touches of originality such as the cured pig cheek used to enrich the spaghetti sauce in my starter - delicious .

I opted for venison chops as my main and three hearty chunks of meat were proffered along with a decent dollop of creamy flavoursome parmesan mash.

I also tried the evening's vegetable special which was the world's tastiest broccoli (it takes an absolute genius to make broccoli more-ish.....).

The bill for 2 was just over 50 quid including a bottle of house red and a larhe bottle of fizzy water - excellent value considering the quality and originality on show (never mind the healthy portions).

So, not 'yer average spag bol and pizza house - well worth se
