Previously the source of Edinburgh's best selection of speciality Danish bakery, Joanna Coleman has shifted the focus from daily baking to bespoke bakery classes, with sessions focussing on bread, chocolate, French macaroons, Danish biscuits or cupcakes. The daytime café no longer operates unless by arrangement for special functions. Classes can be booked via links on their Facebook page or by sending an email.

I just had the macroon class today and it was amazing! I am sure that some people have had an experience different than what they were expecting but our class taught us exactly how to make macroons and everyone's turned out perfect.

I have been wanting to make macroons for months and it was so nice to have a class that made it so easy and fun.

I would highly recommend Jo Jo's classes!

Tried to redeem a Groupon voucher three times for a tray of cupcakes. Promised cupcakes today, turned up and shop was locked. I should have known not to bother as the last time, it was quite a drawn out process trying to get the cupcakes as well However, I thought give them a second chance as people can get unwell etc.. However I wished I had not. I have now rung up Groupon and advised them that this is a very unreliable outfit, frugal with the truth, clearly does not uphold promises and frankly a very poor attitude. Groupon has credited me with the money I paid for the cupcakes. Last time, the excuse was the owner was not well and therefore could not bake..this time??? No courtesy to even email to say, don't bother coming as they would not be there. Give this place a miss...do NOT EVER buy a Groupon deal with them.

Jo Jo’s has not been open as a cafe since August and has a complete turnover of staff, I am sorry that you had unsatisfactory experience some months ago. Had Jo Jo’s staff or the management team been informed at the time we would be happy to make remedial action.

I agree with the first four reviewers that one visit is enough. Only a handful of tables in the place, so shouldnt be too hard to be nice to all the customers. Service is far from with a smile and to quote my 9 year old niece "why would anyone decorate their cupcakes like that, I could make better" and looking at the multicoloured splodge of icing on top, I could only agree.

The sponge was dry and shortly after downing our tepid hot chocolate we made our excuses and swiftly left the cafe.

There are far better choices in the area that serve you good quality cakes with a smile.

Don't believe everything you read on review sites! Keep an open mind. We have fantastic fun at our retail shop entertaining our customers at our bespoke bakery classes. We run about 15 different classes and we have a loyal customer base.

We've made mistakes but hasn't every new start business but we're stronger and have an exciting future ahead of us!

We were here once, and that was enough, sadly. We had initially arranged to have our Danish afternoon tea (after trying to get hold of JoJo herself for a while) but when we showed up, with two hungry and excited children in tow, we were told that she couldn't have us after all. So we rearranged and came back. Again, we were disappointed. Our bread, which was not very much, was cut into small pieces and were sparsely spread with pate and cheese. Nice enough, but not very much. Our pastries were nice, but again, cut up and not very much.

The service is really what shocked us. She complained that Groupon didn't give her any money (we had booked with them), we tried to make conversation a few times but she seemed very stressed and uncomfortable having people. We ended up feeling we were intruders rather than paying customers.

I really wanted to like this place, and hope JoJo can improve on her service when she gains more experience. I would buy something to go from her, but it felt claustrophobic eating in.

I have joined up to this site just to give a review on this shop.

I have rarely been so disappointed and disgusted by an establish. The customer service from the dark haired girl who serves coffee was absolutely first class, coffee was fantastic also.

However, the owner, is another matter. She was extremely rude to me when asking about her produce and if things were fresh. I was given a reply that was very short and the tone of voice was surprising. After deciding to go for an iced bun and also a cupcake for my friend, I discovered that the iced bun was by no means fresh and homebaked! It was still slightly frozen in the centre and am left wondering if these were shop bought!

The cakes although tasty enough were not vanilla cupcakes as advertised and not sure how fresh they were either.

After eating and drinking what we could I asked for a toilet, to be told it was for staff use leaving me a bit confused as to whether i could use it or not. after staff saying i could use this i was shocked to find no lock on the door, a sink directly next to the toilet full of washing and someone icing cakes down there! it was filthy.

Very disappointed with both service and product here! Plenty of other places to visit, will not be back here again.

I recently booked on a chocolate making course at Jojos and it was disappointing. The cafe itself is 'sparse' as the above review mentions - it is not exactly a concious effort at Scandinavian minimalism though, there just isn't much there (and even my ikea table at home isn't as wobbly as the one I used). It's a relatively small space and the number of people on the course made it seem cramped, and some people on the opposite end of the tables couldn't see the demonstrations.

The course was not exactly chocolate making, just tasting and 'having fun' with chocolate. All very well however if this is the case it shouldn't be advertised as chocolate making. All we did was 'make' some hot chocolate (4 pieces of chocolate in some hot water with spices), make a chocolate fondant flower (the only useful part of the course) and dip some pre-made chocolate ganache balls into melted chocolate. The chocolate fondant flower making was interesting, however Jojo did not make one first and show us an example of what it should look like and there were some 'interesting' flowers as a result. For the truffles, we did scoop out some of the pre-made ganache and roll these into balls before dipping them into chocolate, I suppose this could count as 'making' truffles but really what would have been useful is taking us through the whole process rather than using pre-made ganache. It would have been good to learn about tempering chocolate: how to know when a ganache is ready to be set and how to know when chocolate is ready to be used to cover them. We are meant to receive an email with these instructions (still waiting...) but really I could find these from a book in the library and was hoping for some chocolate making in practice.

The course was poorly put together as we had to wait around at the end for the chocolate truffles to set, with absolutely nothing to do (about 40 minutes) - this should have been done at the beginning so we could have at least left when we wished to. Whilst waiting around for this, I tried to press Jojo for her chocolate making 'secrets' but she didn't really answer any questions which was a shame.

I have tried the pastries at Jojo's before and they were nice. I wouldn't recommend eating in as I didn't enjoy the atmosphere and I don't recommend the chocolate making course.
