The 2013 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).
This review is taken from the 2012 edition.
Browns is a safe pair of hands in George Square, a busy part of town where food choices can seem overwhelming. It has a French influence in its styling and décor but a very British feel in the food – with a name like Browns it could hardly have anything but. The menu is divided into ‘classics and grills’ – for the patriotic burgers, pies and the like – then a bizarre ‘fish, pasta, salad and vegetarian’ section which could almost be labelled ‘foreign stuff’. It is just a shame there is nothing very Scottish on offer – the featured steak is from the west country. There are some tempting descriptions such as courgette, pea and feta filo parcel and prices are very good. Overall a good place to meet up as no one will have far to go to catch a bus or train home.

Went here for the first time the other day.
I'll start with the bad points, because I'm an awkward so and so...
The piano player vamping American standards late on in the afternoon was annoying. I'm sure the lad is a top-tickler when it comes to all things musical but it didn't entertain me.
Secondly, the outfits! Now I'm no Gok Wan, but seeing the female staff in the white shirts and black ties was a bit too formal for my liking. In fact the atmosphere was rather like a mix between a large hotel and a cruise ship.
However, the food - because let's face it, that's the most important thing!
Crab and lobster croquettes to start and they were excellent.
Grilled chicken breast, covered in pancetta for the main course and that was extremely good.
Chocolate brownie to finish - smashing!I'd go back again as the food was terrific and it was decent value. However, in all seriousness, I'm not sure what it would be like on a Friday or Saturday evening. So, come on List foodies, get those reviews up!
