The 2013 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).
This review is taken from the current (2013) edition.
Tucked away on a lane off Rose Street, Turkish Kitchen is unassuming but full of heart. A garlic and herb aroma fills the air and whets the appetite – an appetite that’s much needed for the more than generous portions. Start with a selection of mezze, prepared while you wait. Thick, nutty hummus, grilled hellim cheese with a red cabbage salad, prawns baked with mushrooms and tomatoes, all mopped up with as much hot, oily pitta bread as you can eat. If you’re not full to bursting after this, there’s a wide selection of lamb, chicken, kebab and vegetarian mains to choose from. The hunkar begendi, char-grilled marinated lamb served with creamed aubergine and topped with roasted vegetables, is hearty and tasty, and paticlan sarma, aubergine baked with feta, tomato and herbs, is juicy and fragrant. All mains are served with a portion of brown rice and salad, and if they prove too much for you, chef Seyhmus Aslanalp will pop any leftovers into a doggy bag. Try, however, to save a little room for some baklava; it’s worth it.

I agree with reviewer no2; T.K. doesn't look much from the outside, but it has the relaxed feeling of a local, unpretentious cafe inside. The Meze platter for two is good value - generous portions and good quality.
No offence to reviewer no1, but if you felt your lamb needed more cooking I think you would only have had to ask - the service was attentive and very friendly when I visited recently.

A gem of a place, I think the previous reviewer must be talking about somewhere else! I'm a regular at this small cosy restaurant and have never been disappointed by either the food or the service.
The lunch deal is especially good value, with 2 sizeable courses for £7.50, but a la carte dishes are reasonable for the size, and - having lived in Turkey for a while, I can guarantee are authentic!Give it a try, and don't let the unprepossessing outside put you off.

Not sure how this place may ever be considered to be both: a good value and Turkish cooking example (according to The List). My family lunch there proved to be a rip-off (as the lunch menu was not available for some reason at 12.30 am on a Wednesday). Two portions of "still-bleeding" grilled lamb and a small portion of rice and salad along with two 7UPs came to £30! No receipt was offered either. I am seriously considering reporting him to the Trading Standards Office - this is the worst meal I had in Edinburgh over past 15 years!
