Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2013 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the 2012 edition.

Based in the former Tattie Macs, Crabby’s is the ideal relaxed, friendly destination for those who may be curious but unconfident about delving into the magical world of Scottish seafood. The small shopfront opens into a large warm contemporary setting with chic black and white wallpaper, grey paintwork, lots of mirrors, wooden floors and tables attended by lively and chatty service staff who help keep the experience appealing and fun. The food is entertaining too – all amped-up flavours and stylish flourishes. Starters of perfectly cooked scallops are given a sprightly lemon lift served on a bed of sweet roasted peppers and pak choi while the potted crab thermidor is light in texture but full of fresh sea flavour served with a crunchy, garlicky breadcrumb topping. From the mains a pearly sea bass cooked in paupiette along with a tricky mixture of vegetables and scallops has a sweet undertow and rich herby juices while the seafood curry is surprisingly light and zingy with bright Thai notes and fragrant rice. A pleasant informal buzz hangs around the place and its commitment to European style approachability is laudable.

Fairly decent Friday night supper was had here recently. Nice surroundings (although I found the fake shrubbery a bit tacky) and the food was decent, if a little overpriced.

Dessert options seemed a wee bit limited though. Tattie's isn't the only place of late that has left me wanting on the pudding front. What's so wrong with having a crumble or bread and butter pudding on the menu for us traditionalists? It is winter after all!

They also did seem to go a bit overboard on the semi-raw asparagus though. I notice another reviewer commented on it's unseasonality and I'd have to agree.

Went here on my birthday with partner and kids and we all had a fantastic meal. Handy for us was the fact that they had pizzas which pleased the kids and also an excellent choice of 'grown up' food for the adults. I had the lamb with creamed cabbage and garlic which came with an absolutely delicious jus - this was one of the best plates of food I've tasted - the lamb - a brilliant high quality cut cooked to perfection. Only small problem was that it was packed so felt a bit cramped - but for this standard of food at affordable prices, this is was a minor inconvenience.

Nice little place. I have only one complaint. A dish that has been sullying the menu since it opened: wild mushroom and asparagus lasagne. Had it twice, it is horrible, tasteless stodge. Asparagus in January?

"Fruit and veg should be seasonal," he said [Gordon Ramsay]. "Chefs should be fined if they haven't got ingredients in season on their menu.

"I don't want to see asparagus on in the middle of December. I don't want to see strawberries from Kenya in the middle of March. I want to see it home grown."

Have eaten here on three different occasions and can honestly say that this is the best place to eat on Glasgow-the food is amazing and really good value.
Living in an area where fresh langoustine, scallops and lobster is readily available,am constantly being fobbed off with "fresh" seafood which is fresh -out of a freezer.Tattie Mac's seafood IS fresh!!
As previously posted, staff are friendly, attentive and not overbearing.
Cannot wait to eat there again

Our fifth visit and glad to say that Tattie Mac's has never disappointed us or the various friends we introduce to it! Food is innovative, tasty, plentiful and beautifully presented. Service is cheerful and attentive. We will be returning of course as there are many options still to try and we have not found fault with anything so far! Hope that standards will remain high and look forward to our next visit. Our favourite local restaurant and well worth seeking out.

I first stumbled upon Tattie Macs on a late Sunday afternoon stroll and it turned out to be one of the most enjoyable afternoons I've had. Armed with the Sunday papers we initially thought we would go in for a snack, however, on looking at the menu and the huge list of specials, we stayed for 3 hours and 4 courses! It's a laid back atmosphere with no issue on us covering the tables with newspapers as we enjoyed the fabulous food and wine on offer. Stand out for me were the scallops special, done in a light creamy leek sauce, absolutely brilliant. We also really enjoyed the platter of mini-desserts which was just enough for two and each one delicious. The waiter/server was attentive without being overpowering and enjoyed a chat. It now has it's place in my top 5 places to eat in Glasgow and is well worth a visit.

Great food and a pleasant atmosphere. I went here once for coffee and cake and saw how good the food looked I had to go back! Returned for a lazy lunch with two friends, my pave of beef was excellent, the reduced sauce it was served with was perfect and the spuds creamy. My companions both enjoyed their dishes (risotto and seafood pasta). Finished the meal with some cheese, really good cheddar and some unfortunately rather past it blue cheese. Had I not been so full / pleased with the previous course I would have mentioned the cheese issue to the well mannered staff who I don't doubt would have resolved the situation. Cheesed off or not I'm giving this place a 5/5 for providing great food in a pleasant atmosphere, unfortunately its location means less people will discover it than should.
