Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2014 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the 2011 edition.

It was little surprise to see Hubbard’s become the latest establishment on the Great Western Road to undergo a student-friendly makeover when it reopened as The Wise Monkey in early 2010. Although it’s had less of a wholesale conversion than it has a basic rebranding. A canvas banner is the only external change, while inside, the drinks and food have been greatly expanded, and a big emphasis placed on live music - full band or open mic sessions take place most nights. A fresh lick of paint and reflooring is pending, but otherwise this is much the same careworn old watering hole it’s long since been, hence plenty of veterans are mixed in among newer younger patrons. Food wise, it’s burgers, pizzas, pastas and general pub grub, with a few nice flourishes such as the chef’s own chunky salsa on the nachos. A good range of continental bottled beers - including Paulaner, Weihenstephan and Schöfferhofer - are served in chilled pint glasses.

I'm five starring the pub because I loved it and have been quite a few times now since it reopened and had great fun.

I was glad to see it had a huge selection of beer and ciders, more than the average pub which was greatly appreciated by my brother.

You can still have a good conversation and it is spacious enough for it to be private, I have been in with a large group of coleagues and we had a brilliant night for my boss who was leaving. The owner told me I could have reserved an area ahead of time if I had wished which I thought was good for future nights.

I have also ben in with my friend to have a listen to the Meatmen who are on every Thursday and were excellent.

The bar staff are nice and God knows, we need pubs like this.

They do food here, bar staff are very polite. Bars like this are a dying breed and while I'm glad they still exist.

Look out or me, I will be a regular for sure!
