really awful place. a BAD joke. never seems to improve despite all the complaints. presumably they take advantage of the town having endless visitors, tourists. cant imagine anyone EVER returns there.
gives a BAD name to Edinburgh.
who are these people saying the coffee is good? the owners? even coffee here is BAD and i was served a slice of cake which was hard as rock!
the other bakery offerings at the counter were indeed dire. shudder!

Absolutely dire place since it changed hands. Had a dreadful experience there of waiting for ages for food, friend's cooked meal took nearly 45 minutes and was pretty awful. I had to ask for my scone with my tea and when it arrived it had been micro-waved and fell to bits so had to get another. The 'jam' is the cheapest imaginable and it totally runny, ending up over my trousers, never near the scone. Avoid like the plague, service dreadful, food worse, place filthy and don't go to the basement for the loos.

Double Dutch is my favourite place so far in the center of old town edinburgh for some really good, reasonably priced mediterranean food. I came here on a sunny day and was able to eat outside with great service and a really good atmosphere! I really hope to come back again next time i'm in the area, I would recomend it heartily.

came here a couple of times with friends from uni, a great place to go on the way to and from lectures, amazing food for vegetarians, never been so full in my life! staff were polite and helpful, generally great chilled out place. :)

A diner-type place, that in Festival season gets very busy due to its proximity to the university area, site of many Fringe venues. The staff were impressively friendly and helpful despite being obviously rushed. Unfortunately this was rather overshadowed by the food, which is absolutely terrible. We're not just talking so-so or mediocre here- it is truly awful. In particular a bowl of "chilli beef nachos" was more like a practical joke than an actual meal. You almost admire their nerve in charging for it. Very interesting to read the review upthread about people getting sick after eating here- I don't find this remotely surprising. Best avoided.

Double Dutch has quickly become my favourite coffee/lunch spot. The mediterranean-inspired food is fresh and delicious, the atmosphere is bright and friendly, and the coffee is wonderful... all for a reasonable price and in a great location. I have taken many friends and family-members here, and they agree. I highly recommend you try it out!

I went to Double Dutch to meet up with friends last year and had some food there. I spent the next 24 hours with food poisoning (norovirus). One of my friends said that when she'd been there in the past, she'd been handed a slice of mouldy cake. I've met two people who used to work in the kitchens and both said that the food hygiene there is appalling, with filthy kitchen surfaces and basic hand-washing rules ignored. I rang Double Dutch and told them what had happened, and all they could offer me was a free meal, which isn't much use since I'm obviously never eating there again. They certainly didn't seem interested in taking responsibility for the affair and checking out what was going on. I reported the incident to Environmental Health, who took it very seriously since there were several other incidents known of.

I have eaten here on a few occasions and previously found the place to be nice and relaxing. The food does not appeal to everyone, and unless you are eating salad, you will struggle to get enough to put between two slices of bread.
However, I recently went when the restaurant was busy and found the place to be a total shambles.
After waiting more than 30mins for my food, I was presented with a meagre offering which was supposed to be a full breakfast. But in actual fact was a cold serving which would struggle to satisfy the appetite of a mouse.
Yet I still couldn't tuck into my cold breakfast as the waitress neglected to bring me a knife and fork. After waiting a further few minutes I decided rather than let the food go to sub-zero temperatures I should retrieve the items of cutlery myself, which I did. I waited another 5 minutes to see whether or not they will be treating me to their delicious toast, but with no luck! I had to ask 2 separate members of staff before I got my toast - which term I'm using very loosely as it seemed like someone only shook a match at a slice of bread (oh yes, this was also cold!).
To add insult to injury the whole experience cost me £16. As you can imagine I didn't leave a tip but here is a tip for you ONLY GO WHEN THE PLACE IS NOT BUSY!ps: the coffee IS good :-)
