Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2013 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the 2012 edition.

From the rockabilly music coming over the speakers to the ‘50s movie posters and cheesecake burlesque shots decorating the walls, Guilty Lily proves to be a bar of welcoming and slightly saucy character. Its success as a local boozer has been built on this reputation, as well as a variety of weekly events (a quiz on Monday, live music every Saturday and themed food nights including Mexican Wednesdays, steak on Saturday and a popular Sunday roast), while the food is above-average pub fare. Expect a daily soup along the lines of a thick, rich cream of cauliflower, a bunch of quick and modestly priced pasta dishes and larger snacks including nachos and deep-fried camembert, while a well-done, Cajun-spiced chicken fillet served with goat’s cheese on a bun is a hearty treat.

  • High point: A loveable local with real personality.
  • Low point: The food is the least attention-grabbing thing on offer.
  • Number of wines sold by the glass: 7
  • Private dining: Up to 30 covers
  • Provides: Vegetarian options (at least ¼ main courses), Children's portions, Children's high chairs, Wheelchair access, Live music, Free wi-fi
  • Music on stereo: Rockabilly, surf guitar, country
  • Capacity: 40
  • Largest group: 25
  • Open since: 2008
  • House wine: £12.95 per bottle

We chose Guilty Lily to provide our wedding breakfast and couldn't have been more delighted!

From our first meeting the staff were bending over backwards to make our day special - nothing was too much trouble. We had the whole bottom half of the restaurant to ourselves on the day and couldn't have asked for the staff to work harder. The meal was stunning - even 6 weeks later people are still talking about how gorgeous the meal was and hoe relaxed and informal the day was. I am sure a large part of this was due to the input from Guilty lily. they made sure everyone's glasses were kept full, even though we had pre bought the wine and it was on the table for people to help themselves. They dealt with the children professionally and dilligently and made sure they had everything they needed so I felt relaxed enough to enjoy my day.

We had previously had lunch in the place a few times to make sure we enjoyed the food and on none of these occasions could I fault the staff, the food or the environment. It was a perfect venue for my 50's inspired wedding day.

Having just read all of the other revues. Can I add that we were there July 5th. 2012, and I note that there have been NO negative revues for 2 years now.

We had a chuckle at the board that says that they are both children and dog friendly. The wording might have been better thought out.

It Read:-

DOG FRIENDLY
Children Welcome until 10.00 pm

So after 10.00 pm are Dog unfriendly children welcome?

This was my first time in the Guilty Lily. I was accompanied by my wife and our eldest son. The Guilty Lily was very warm and friendly. The staff were very friendly. The choice was also better than expected. They have a set menu as well as Chef's "Special of the Day".

There was a choice of TWO soups and we all opted for the Cullen Skink. If you have never tried a fish soup - you MUST ask for the Cullen Skink.

I have already recommended this venue on Facebook to friends as meeting place for small branches of Regimental Associations to gather. Or for Veterans meeting up with the "Old and the Bald" for a quiet "Knees Up".

I know friends and family members will become regulars for meals, or just a leisurely coffee.

We had a table for 9 booked today at Guilty Lily today for mother's day. The four mother's were given a free drink and dessert. The menu was amazing with a variety of food for everyone. I am vegetarian and it was good to be offered several choices. The spiced butternut squash soup served with some amazing toasted bread was fabulous! The dishes served up to the rest of the party were beautifully presented and LARGE. The service from staff was second to none. Drinks were flowing and the bill was only £155. Children and dog friendly pub. Have already recommended this place to friends. Will go back!!!

We went to the Guilty Lily on Friday 10th October as it's now dog friendly and it was a nice walk by the Water of Leith for us to get there and back. The service and drink was good and the food was excellent. The waiter offered us a drink of water for our dog, which was a nice touch. I had Fish Pie off the specials board. It was served with chips and salad and it was absolutely delicious. My daughter had a burger, which she enjoyed, but there was so much to eat she couldn't get through it all. The atmosphere is lovely and relaxing. I'll definitely be going back.

My partner and I visited last night as we live locally. There has been a few changes recently, and apparently with chefs. The staff (only one) cannot be faulted - friendly and chatty. The beer and wine - great.

Downfall - the food. I ordered a chicken breast with goats cheese, and the other half a veggie burger, both sevred with chips and salad. When the plates arrived we both had two small pieces of lettuce with a slice of tomato; the chips (not a great quanity) were undercooked.

We thought about pudding, opting for chocolate brownies with ice cream - all i can say is that if you are hungry, you will not be full after eating here.

Unsure of the reason, but The Guilty Lily has gone down in terms of good food, which they used to do. The price for what you got - terrible. The sort of meal you'd expect at a one stop burger shop.

Will not be back

My wife and I popped in here for a bite to eat last night as it has been a while since we have frequented the guilty lily. We were served by a lovely chap who ironically has also worked in a pub we visit every summer in Skye. It was great to see that he had brought his welcoming and friendlly chat with him.
We both opted for the macaroni cheese with chorizo sausage as it seemed a little different, the dish tasted great and was washed down with a tempranillio which I probably should not have had 2 off on a work night... When told that a fresh apple & cinnamon crumble had come out of the oven we could not refuse! (Who could?).
All in all we had a lovely meal, good service and shall be returning!

Very rude staff and it seems to attract a rather unsavoury element on Friday/Saturday nights who are no doubt there for the dubious "cabaret" shows. A limited low quality selection of wines despite being near an excellent wine merchant (Friarwood). Its a shame because the food is actually very good and the interior is pretty cool.

Perhaps they should try and focus more on being a community based establishment?

Fab food, fab atmosphere and great staff... just bring back the chunky chips we all love... you know it makes sense!!

I was immediately put off by the reception I received when phoning to book a table. Rude, abrupt and unwelcoming - I would recommend a few training sessions on customer service.

Rude service, we're not going back, they lost us as customers.

My wife and I went in to have some lunch - she was also desperate for the toilet. Unfortunately because she started the conversation by saying 'can I use your loo?', before she ordered, the waiter/barman said "No" rudely, turned round and walked away. We could barely believe our ears and left.

Presumably he must have thought that we had just come in to take advantage of the toilet rather than eat, but something more polite, along the lines of 'I'm afraid the toilets are only for customers' would have brought out an explanation from us that we were indeed customers. Being rude and walking away was totally uncalled for.
