The 2013 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).
This review is taken from the current (2013) edition.
Blankets are provided at Peter’s Yard so you can persevere with alfresco eating even in the colder Scottish months. As testament to its popularity the outdoor tables are filled with coffee-drinking students and pastry-munching professionals all year round. This style-conscious Swedish bakery-cum-cafe adds a distinctly continental flavour to Middle Meadow Walk, where bright window seating provides the perfect people-watching opportunity. For a comforting treat amid the baskets of speciality breads and buns try a hot chocolate subtly flavoured with cardamom. The selection of cakes is impressive, with some inventive creations like courgette, fig and chocolate loaf added to an already ample spread of authentic Swedish bakes. Lunches are a select array of pre-prepared sandwiches and salads made with creative flavour combinations, such as a roll with butternut squash, chickpeas and sunblush tomato pesto, or a salad with orzo pasta, beetroot, dill, chives and capers.
- High point: A place to relax in style
- Low point: Could add a selection of smoothies
Listed in The Larder – in the shops now or buy online.
A unique store that deserves its reputation for integrity, Peter's Yard is a destination for foodies looking to treat themselves. This Swedish bakery focuses on quality rather than quantity. Three or four varieties of fresh artisan loaf include rye and sourdough, varying in flavour throughout the week, and they are famous for their knäckebröd (crispbread). Sandwiches, muffins, breakfasts and cakes are available to take away or enjoy on the premises, as well as a good range of teas and coffees.

Poisoned mouse in Peter's Yard – 4 Jan 2009, 4:24pm

This happened last summer at Peter's Yard, Edinburgh, it was absolutely horrible!
I was waiting to buy a bread and a coffee when a mouse ran out right in front of me! Or staggered would maybe be a better suited word. Obviously poisoned and not long to live; blood coming out on the floor where it lay down. The staff scooped it up with a brush and pan and binned it in the back. I put the bread down and I am never going back. It was rather clear that as the mouse was poisoned, it had been more than one and who knows whereabouts that had been?!
