Perthshire Larder

Listed in Perthshire Larder – in the shops now or buy online.

Husband and wife Colin Steele and Jennifer Hustler-Steele opened Blairgowrie Farm Shop in 2007 to bring fertile Perthshire’s daily picked fruit and vegetables to its townsfolk. 'A hub for fresh and local goods, to help other local businesses and the local economy,' is how they describe their Reform Street shop, displaying baskets of kale, sweet potatoes, romanesco, parsley, damsons and seasonal sundries, if not plucked within a 25-mile radius, then elsewhere nearby in Scotland. Shelves stock the county’s jams, jellies, honeys, oatcakes and biscuits, while fridges contain Highland beef from Bridge of Cally, Puddledub pork and buffalo from Fife, and even Japanese ‘McWagyu’ beef from Perthshire. The couple deliver veg boxes every Friday and Saturday within a 10-mile radius, plus Perth and Dundee, and they do web and mail order via their website.

Regarding comment 30 Dec 2011.
I would like to respond by stating the facts. Both you and I discussed at length the issue with quills on the duck. Any hand-plucked bird may have a few quills left on which quickly disappear on cooking. We could not replace it as we had no stock left. You were offered alternatives. The photos shown in the shop were on a small mobile phone screen around 1" wide which was not the clearest to me. We got the poultry farmer with over 30 years of experience in the poultry trade to talk to you, wrote you a letter of apology and refunded you in full for the cost of the bird.
It is dissapointing that you have had to comment in this way, but I just wanted to state the facts.

I bought a free range duck from this shop for our Christmas dinner. When I returned home with it, I was horrifird to find that it looked more like a porcupine. The bird still had the quills in it. When I contacted the shop I was told they could do nothing about it as they didn't have another one to give me. He told me to go into the shop after the holiday and he would sort it out for me.
I have just returned - what a rude objectionable man. Even thogh I showed him photographs and took in the (frozen) cooked skin to prove it still contained the quills he refused to do anything about it.
£26 for a bird that I had to spend time plucking myself, time wasted - but worst of all Christmas dinner spoiled.
