Khublai Khans Mongolian Restaurant
Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2013 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the current (2013) edition.

Leith’s Mongolian outpost welcomes a new owner with ambitions to add a little more polish to proceedings. Man v Food fans shouldn’t worry, however, as the all-you-can-eat barbecue feast remains centre stage and safari park exotic meats are still very much to the fore. A DIY assembly line stretches out from rice and vegetables past an impressive array of spices and sauces ending with cubes of zebra, camel and springbok, with more familiar cuts for the less adventurous. Each bowlful is expertly sautéed on the semi-circular griddle, with a separate vegetarian-friendly hot plate upstairs. For the indecisive, there are easy-to-follow recipes including the playfully titled bobby’s bum buster – not for the faint hearted. Bookending the barbecue, kangaroo haggis and wild boar parcel starters promise slightly more than they deliver, and golden syrup sponge and rhubarb crumble desserts seem in line for a makeover. With a well-stocked bar and a long dining hall that is easily configured for large parties, this quirky novelty act should continue to be a crowd pleaser.

  • High point: Plenty to talk about at this fun night out
  • Low point: Congestion at the spice and sauce counter at busier times
  • Number of wines sold by the glass: 13
  • Delivery: from £1.50
  • Provides: Gluten-free options, Children's portions, Children's high chairs, Pre-theatre menu, Free wi-fi
  • Music on stereo: Mongolian ambient/mood
  • Capacity: 80
  • Largest group: Whole restaurant
  • Open since: June 1995
  • House wine: £14.75 per bottle

Absolutely dreadful restaurant - the food ingredients were tired, the meat (with refried rice) was overcooked whereas the vegetables undercooked and the vegetables still tasted of detergent. Just awful food - we were not drinking unlike the majority of the punters beside us who kept the waiters away from our table so we had poor service as well. Reminded me of really bad student food. Inedible - we did not go up for our several servings - all 5 of us felt the same - and we all had different food combination. If you care about food and the balance of ingredients don't eat here.

I think PaulB has mis-read. It is listed under Round the World not vegetarian.

WHY ON EARTH is this place listed under 'vegetarian' restaurants when it serves ostrich, venison, springbok, wildboar, zebra, crocodile etc? Please can someone move it somewhere more appropriate?

A bunch of us visited this rest recently and were gob smacked! We paid £19.95 for a 3 course meal including the BBQ as the main course where you can eat as much as you like. The great things about this place are the choice of meats - including the likes of ostrich, venison, springbok, wild boar, zebra and crocodile (as well as more usual stuff and seafood); the freshness of all the ingredients; the relaxed, helpful staff; the authentic decor and the Mongolian beer!
Also, both the starters and desserts are a wee bit different - Yak ribs! and all homemade.
We also saw them dress up a chap who was on a Stag night in full Mongolian robes and hat and seat him on a huge wooden throne. They also stuck a huge firework in his dessert - great fun!
If you fancy a meal with a difference can't think of anywhere better.
