Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2013 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the current (2013) edition.

New breweries are springing-up across Scotland amid the craft beer revolution, but the country’s only German-style microbrewery sits apart from that trend, by drawing its inspiration from centuries-old Bavarian traditions. WEST can be found in most good bars in Glasgow and beyond, but for purity of experience to match their dedication to the Reinheitsgebot German brewing purity law, best get down to the Munich-style beer hall/garden and restaurant at WEST’s spectacular Templeton Building HQ. The hearty Bavaria-by-way-of-Scotland food sees St. Mungo lager-battered fish and chips meet jäger schnitzel, or a special none-more-Deutsch-than currywurst. Situated by Glasgow Green, on a typically busy weekend the place heaves with all from families and dog-walkers to beer lovers clinking frothy pints of staples such as Hefeweizen and Munich Red or seasonal brews à la Wild West golden lager and WEST Black stout.

Went to West for lunch with some friends I had never been before but had heard mixed reviews so was dubious!
I had the hot smoked salmon sandwich then apple strudel which was yummy!
The waiter even recommended some of the beers for us to compliment our dishes.
The place was quite busy and had a great buzz about it and a fun atmosphere.
Can't fault the place we had a lovely lunch and I will definitely be back!

Great for Drinks, but the food was terrible! I ordered a chicken baguette, which comes with tortilla chips and salsa. The best thing about this dish was the fresh and zingy salsa. The chicken was swimming in mayo and the baguette was rock hard. My husband ordered a burger with jalepenos and cheddar, which are chargeable (there was a scraping of cheddar and 4 jalepenos). It took 4 bites to get to the tiny burger and after all that work it was overcooked and very gristley. Yuk! We shared a bowl of beer battered onion rings and they came 15 minutes after our meals arrived. They tasted of, well, nothing at all. The service was painfully slow and the soft drinks are pricey. I would never order food at West Bar again. To end on a positive note, the beer garden was spacious and spotlessly clean and the vibe was very relaxed. Worth going for a drink on a sunny day, but avoid the food at all costs.

The food is extremely disappointing: poor portions & not as advertised on menu eg. hand cut chips are quite clearly frozen chips. If the food was half the price then it would not be so bad but quite frankly it's punching above its weight by charging town centre prices for local cafe- quality food. Beer garden could do with some more tables. Beer is good.
