Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2013 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the 2012 edition.

For someone who’s never seen it before, the Church on the Hill is pretty stunning – a refurbished church that looks like the Parthenon in Greece, facing on to Queen’s Park. It really is a lovely venue, and very popular with a cross-section of Southsiders, from families through to a rather more boisterous crowd in the evening. Lots of flat screen TVs with good vantage points, and a well-stocked bar aimed at the pre-club crowd (with lots of promotions) keep the masses happy. The back section is for eating, doing some mainstream meat and fish dishes (fillet of seabass, chicken supreme) alongside the more popular pastas (of which, king prawn and chorizo linguine has a nice light, pulpy sauce) and good old burgers (including a lamb one), which are nicely priced and well-presented. A worthy alternative to Shawlands, especially in the summer.

  • High point: Fantastic building
  • Low point: Rowdy and crowdy in the evenings
  • Provides: Children's portions, Children's high chairs, Wheelchair access

Had to help a couple slipping on the icy forecourt as we approached around 2pm Saturday and then found that about a third of the seats were reserved in the bar area. Had to settle for two uncomfortable wooden stools against a pillar. Chose two good Chilean wines at £4.50 per 250ml glass. Said hello to one of the barstaff who completely blanked me. I asked another if the bar had wifi and got “Naw!”.

The place looked tired and in need of a spring clean – sticky table, grubby glass on the door, dull décor, etc.
When I went to the toilet, the door in the first cubicle didn’t close so I tried cubicle 2. I can’t describe the scene there – like something out of Trainspotting. I didn’t hang about but saw no sign of any cleaning schedule.

As we left I felt physically sick. We had to cope again with the slippy slopes which were still unsalted. Needless to say, I wouldn’t consider eating there if that’s what is on public view. This looks like a place whick could be great if it was properly managed and the emphasis was on basic hospitality and hygiene.
