Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2013 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the current (2013) edition.

Hamilton’s is a real treat for Pop Art fans, with its décor and drinks menu emblazoned with glamorous women and tough guys. The fine range of cocktails will have you salivating over such intriguingly named creations as French Nuclear Test and the Jayne Mansfield, but the effort expended on the drinks menu merely puts the A4 sheet of food choices into perspective. Fortunately, the quality of the food lives up to the drinks, with a wide choice of small dishes and sharing plates acting as an enticing gateway to some big sandwiches served with parsnip fries and large mains such as a wholesome sweet potato, carrot and bean burger or steak pie with rich gravy and spring onion mash. Desserts include a homely rhubarb, apple and cherry crumble with vanilla ice-cream and Scottish cheeses with sloe gin chutney and oatcakes. If you can move after all that, make your way to a long leather sofa and relax with a cocktail.

I've noticed that most of the reviews on here are pretty old. I would really recommend to everyone to try Hamilton's for themselves at some point - you won't be disappointed! I was recently at Hamilton's for my staff Christmas meal and it was fantastic. It was great value for money and the menu was exciting - not just boring old turkey! The atmosphere in the place was buzzing and you could tell that everyone was having a really brilliant night. The staff were also very friendly and attentive, despite how busy it was.

Since my Christmas meal, I have been in a couple of times for lunch and always leave with a smile on my face. They must be doing something right as I saw them reviewed (very favourably) in BBC's Olive Magazine this month and the cocktails were mentioned in Grazia Magazine! The menus are changed to suit the seasons and I'm looking forward to going again soon to find out what the January menu has to offer. 5 stars!!!

Just came across these reviews and felt compelled to write and address the balance - What are you people talking about? I live in Stockbridge and go to Hamiltons all the time, for drinks, food and sometimes coffee and use the free wifi. The food is amazing......the menu changes all the time, which i love so there is always something new to try. Case in Point, went last week with some friends and i had mussels to start (classic) and the most amazing lamb dish , one of my friends had a crab risotto and the other 2 had burgers. We all love it and shared some home made ice cream which i hear they make on the premises. The place looks great, staff are friendly and know their stuff and you can dress up or down, have dinner or chill on the sofas -- what more would you want from a bar?
ignore any bad reviews and believe the list people who have hit listed this place. It is great. Love it.

I was at Hamiltons for lunch on Sunday and was deeply disappointed.

I waited well over an hour between ordering my lunch and it arriving. I ordered the full Scottish breakfast but what arrived was a 3/4 Scottish. There was no sausage or beans, I understand that they can run out of items but they could at least have the courtesy to mention it when they give you your food. The remaining food was acceptable with the exception of the runny scrambled eggs which were possibly the most vile things I have ever tasted. Finally on the breakfast, if it comes with tea or coffee I do not think you are unreasonable in assuming you will be asked what you want rather than having to hunt down the waitress to request it. But it does not end there.

My wife ordered the fish and chips. It was only when she had eaten about a quarter of it that she noticed it was raw in the middle. When this was brought to the waitresses attention she did not even offer an apology, a discount or at least to get a fresh fish.

I was party of a large party which may explain some of the complaints but if they cannot handle a large booking they should not take them.

Food here is excellent, especially if you don't want to have a full blown meal. There are imiaginative salads, grilled skewers plus the sort of thing you might expect from pub grub like fish or burger and chips - all fresh and crispy. BUT....it is is really, really noisy and difficult to have conversation, especially if you are in a large group of people or, even harder, in a tête-à-tête. It's hard to know just whicb bit of the Stockbridge market they are appealing to here. The bar is lively and fun, but the atmophere doesn't transfer well to the dining area, which is a shame as - even though there was a long wait for food on a busy night - the staff are pleasant and polite.
