I have been a frequent patron of Montgomery's as it was always either on my way to work or I lived down the road, and in an area full of excellent places to have breakfast or lunch it remains one of my favorites.
While I can't speak for other people's impressions of this cafe, I can say that one thing is for sure, their coffee is amazing, anyone who can say otherwise is telling a lie or doing so out of some other agenda. No where in Glasgow that I have been to in ten years serves as large a selection of coffee from raspberry infused beans with vanilla foam to traditional percolating Vietnamese coffee. The quality of the coffee when served is also excellent whether you are taking away or sitting in with the right density of froth and layered professionally and not rushed.
SOME of the pastries are bought in, the recent extension was to open a bakery which is addressing the need for home baking, I can tell you first had because I'm munching on one of their Lemon drizzle muffins as I write this, and its pretty awesome.
I am religious about breakfast and have had it almost everywhere. Their breakfast is also very good, eggs bacon and a croissant is recommended. While the eggs are microwaved (I think) they are made with butter and somehow mixed during the process, it actually comes out with a very nice texture. They also bake their bacon (streaky US style not British) which anyone from the US will tell you is the right way to do it, as it comes out perfectly crispy and much leaner.

Been there quite often before the revamp. Food was never really great. But it was a nice quiet place to hang out. Was there today after first time after a the renovation. I definitely liked it better before. Looks like the only reason for renovation was to get more tables in hence more customers. Doesn't make it a quiet place any more. And although music was always quite nice and more in the background today's was some weird heavy metal sound (to my ears) and far too loud. But the reason I'm giving it a one star rating is that this is the second time I felt sick after having their tuna melt sandwich with salad. And that is a killer. You cannot serve dodgy food in a cafe like that. It's not much asked for. As they don't put an effort in much anyway. No service, cakes are bought in (good though) and the coffee isn't mind blowing either. Not going back.

I like working in cafes. This is what people have done on the continent for a very long time. 'Cafe culture' is slowly making its way to Britain which is excellent news. There are lots of good cafes now in Glagow. I thought this was the case of Montgomery. I went there to do some work. I bought a coffee at 9am and sat there until... I was ask to leave by the owner at 12! Although the cafe was 3/4 empty the owner explained he needed the table for paying customers. He said that if wanted to spend the whole day (in fact I didn't and was about to go) I could go to Starbuck. That's pure greed in my view and against the above-mentioned cafe culture. I told the owner he had just lost a customer but he said he didn't care. What can I say? I'll go elsewhere next time and I'm sure other people who care about friendly businesses will do the same.

I love Montgomerys! I live just down the road and although there's masses of similar coffee places in the area, it's definitely my favourite. I like the fact it's not table service- you can take your time deciding what you want or sit and wait on someone without feeling rushed.
The hot chocolate is brilliant and I like their paninis too. The cakes, waffles and chocolate brownies (warm with ice cream) are yummy.
Best of all the staff have a sense of humour- since it's a small (but popular) place, at the bottom of the menu it says to share tables at busy times or 'incur the evil eye'! Ha ha.

Below average. Been twice in recent months, and both times less than great. Crap microwaved eggs, orange juice from a bottle in the fridge, rock hard untasty bacon, good coffee, a belgian waffle, £13. Left hungry, partner felt a bit ill.
And reviewer number 1, yes you do have to order at the till, not sure why however as there are plenty of staff doing not very much.
Must try harder.

I'd note to the above poster that Montgomery's isn't table-service, they may have assumed you were waiting on someone.

Went to Montgomerys on Sunday morning hoping for some breakfast. The place was quiet, only two other customers - I sat in the middle of the cafe in plain view of the surly and uncommunicative assistants. They busied themselves on various tasks, (drinking coffee and chatting) while studiosly ignoring me for 15 MINUTES. Eventually I felt so embarrassed and uncomfortable I got up and left.
Note to staff: You are not doing customers a favour by serving them - it is your JOB! If it's beneath you, find something else to do!
Note to management: arrange some customer service training before your business goes off like a damp squib.
Anyway, on a more positive note, I went to Mortons in Byres Rd and had a good breakfast for half the price.
