The 2013 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).
This review is taken from the current (2013) edition.
Emerging from a complete refurbishment as we went to press in spring 2013, 99 Hanover Street has gone out of its way to grab the attention in elegant and dignified style amid the often gaudy city-centre bars. Catering to an intensely fashionable young crowd, the interior – all high ceilings and exposed brickwork – offers an impressive canvas on which to paint some striking dark gothic flourishes, from the ornate light fittings and chandeliers to the DJ booth (there’s a clubby live soundtrack seven nights a week) made out of an old piano. The drinks selection is impressive, featuring 350 spirit lines and 30 cocktails – the latter featuring five daily choices sold in bespoke 250ml grass bottles for £5 – as well as a wine of the week which is very reasonably priced at £10 a bottle.
- High point: A gorgeous pub to match its clientele
- Low point: Sadly no food
- Number of wines sold by the glass: 11
- Private dining: Up to 60 covers
- Provides: Gluten-free options, Wheelchair access, Live music, Free wi-fi
- Music on stereo: Pre-club DJs in the evening
- Capacity: 180
- Largest group: 180
- Open since: 2006
- House wine: £13.95 per bottle

Hi there
My family and friends decide to call @ 99 Hanover Street for a drink after having lunch. We managed to find a lovely seat. We were hoping to stay all night to sample the cocktails after the third round of cocktails they placed a reserved sign on the table and told us that we had to drink up and leave, as the people were waiting to sit down. They did not have any other seats for us so we had to leave. How awful was that. The sign should have been placed on the table before we sat down, this is what I call bad management. Needless to say we will not be calling back there again incase the same thing happens again.
On the good side one of the Bar staff was really very nice and very helpful, but that did not stop us form being asked to leave.

Could be a great place to hang around... Unfortunately, the staff is more than unfriendly! They seem to be too busy to acknowledge any customers they are not friends with. Very disappointing experience with no customer service at all. A pity!

Really nice place with great music. However it gets really packed in the weekend and uncomfortable.

Terrible place. Quiet Tuesday night with only one table occupied. Walked in and sat down, waited for fifteen minutes and not one person acknowledged us. The staff and chefs were too busy entertaining their friends at the bar. They saw us and turned their backs to continue chaating to each other, so we left. Shame as it used to be quite a nice place to go. But now, don't go there if you want to be ignored, there are plenty of other good places on Hanover Street. Vist trip adviser and you'll see similar reviews. Terrible.

Excellent food from an inventive menu. Service was sluggish, at a quiet point of the day, from the moment we arrived until I complained to the barman in charge. Had to wait 30 minutes for food to arrive at the table and then staff spent 10 minutes chatting to their friends who turned up, instead of clearing the table and bringing the dessert ordered. Felt like we were intruding on a private party. Shame really, as the food was outstanding.

For all the uninitiated out there who have yet to experience 99 - where have you been? good food, fab cocktail list and a staff body which includes a mixologist who is able to create what I can only decribe as sex in a glass at the drop of a hat when I couldn't make my mind up from the cocktail list (so many cocktails so little time) - I don't know what his name is but for anyone who watches MTV's "The Hills" He is a very good likeness for Brent Bolthouse! your drink requests will be safe in this man's hands! I cannot big up 99 enough - had several really good nights out there- check it out
