The 2013 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).
This review is taken from the current (2013) edition.
From the outside, with its plum and gold paintwork and traditional awnings, Hector’s has the appearance of a handsome Victorian apothecary. Inside, it’s deceptively large and light, that rich colour scheme brought up-to-date by exposed brickwork and some funky patterned wallpapers. Pub grub staples (done well) like sausage and mash, burgers and fish and chips proliferate, but dishes like ox cheek and red wine pie offer something for those willing to deviate from the norm, while there’s also a decent stab at a meat platter. This Stockbridge institution is a popular drinking spot as well, with the area’s professionals either winding down with a post-work pint or, come Friday and Saturday, gearing up for the night ahead. Any resulting sore heads are catered for the following day. Should you wish ensconce yourself for the long-haul then there’s brunch, board games and a beer from their rotating line-up of craft lagers and cask ales, and on Sunday, roasts take centre stage, making this a good shout to while away the weekend.

A guide to the village-like Edinburgh suburb
What’s it like? Architecturally lovely and quite picturesque, the area is still pretty bohemian despite the influx of more affluent shops in recent years. Where’s it, like? To the north of the city, between the New Town and Inverleith. It’s about…

I love Hector's and actually just looking at my last review, it is one of my favourite places in town. It is a fantastic place to share a drink with friends, to have a nice meal with my husband, to have a top quality coffee or just to have a quick pint.
However, I must say that I was very disappointed with the staff attitude the last time we were there. When we sat down we had to ask the guy to come and bring the menus and take our order at least 3 times. He was completely uninterested in helping us or serving us at all and he just had an overall arrogant attitude (not the first time we have an unpleasant experience with that particular member of staff!).
Anyways, by the time he came we asked him if we could still order breakfast as it was 10 minutes before they stopped serving and he said yes and then disappeared again! so never actually came to take our order. We asked another waitress to take our order and she told us that brunch time had now ended! :( we explained that we had been waiting for over 10-15 minutes for this guy to pay attention to us, and she very kindly went to the kitchen and arranged for brunch to be prepared for us.
On the other hand, her service was excellent, she came a couple of times to ask us if we needed more drinks and if everything was ok with our food.
In general the place is amazing, but my experience with that particular guy hasn't been the best unfortunately.
