Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2013 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the current (2013) edition.

Going to Miso and Sushi is like going back in time. The décor can't have changed in years. Glaring lights preside over a corridor of booths lined with wood and ancient flock wallpaper. It's in desperate need of a spruce up. However, if there's no love spent on the interior, that's because it all gets lavished on the food. A long menu, both Japanese and Chinese, has all the classics, plus a few more, and the friendly staff will happily talk you through it. A dragon roll, looking not unlike the Loch Ness monster, is theatrically presented on a huge white platter. Salmon teriyaki ramen, complete with a boiled egg, is tasty and nourishing in a rich stock, although the special of grilled salmon belly, drenched in grease and oil, disappoints. There's a constant stream of customers coming in for takeaway and given that the food's good and the interior isn't, that might be your best option. Otherwise, embrace the feeling of being in a retro film set, and enjoy the attention to detail on your plate.

Takeaway review
If you’re going to call yourself Miso and Sushi, you need to pay attention to the miso and the sushi. Thankfully, they know their onions here, with some of the best sushi in town available for pick-up or delivery as well as a compact Japanese menu featuring tempura (although this doesn’t travel so well) and ramen. A fuller Chinese menu is also present and correct, but with sushi this good, why would ya? Spanking fresh, pretty dragon rolls, salmon nigiri, avocado maki and the like, washed down with a balanced, salty-savoury hit of miso soup is going to make your tummy very happy. Delivery charges of £1 per mile may mean picking-up is a better option – expect a 10-15 minute wait or call ahead.

Easily one of the best sushi places in Edinburgh. It is good that they put all their focus on the food and not on the interior of the restaurant, it would have been worse if it had been the other way around and the place looked super trendy and "right" but the food sucked. These people have done it the way it should be.

The portions are generous and the fish is so tasty and tender. Good service both on delivery and sit in the restaurant. I really hope more people will get their eyes up for this place and don't just go to the fancier restaurants with higher prices, smaller portions just because they have spent more money on the look of the restaurant.

Highly recommended and try their sea bass ngiri, it is truly delicious indeed.
Thank you Miso & Sushi people!

Best sushi in Edinburgh in my opinion. Never been to the actual restaurant but I often order delivery. The makis are a bit rice-heavy, but they are always fresh and delicious. My fave are the spicy tuna rolls. So good.

This restaurant is amazing, I can't speak highly enough of the place.
Like reviewer 1, I'm slightly worried about how many customers go there as I love the place, i'd keep it in business myself if I had the money!

The sushi is out of this world, most people I've been with have wanted to order a hot dish as well but after tasting the sushi remarked that it was unneccessary as that was so good. I've taken most of my friends and family there and every one has been blown away by how good the food is, a friend who came with our party actually said that the meal they had there was the best meal they've had in their life so that speaks for itself!

I've also ordered takeaway from there on a number of occasions and it's just exactly as you'd get in the restaurant - I took some across to my family after going there for a meal and my mother, who didn't want to go to the place as she didn't like the idea of sushi, said how amazing it was and she'd like to give it a proper chance!

Ps - I'm honestly not on the payroll, I just believe that the place deserves to be full every night of the week - the food is that good and the prices are also excellent, you definitely get your money's worth.

The food here is great, but they are clearly struggling with too few customers.

I've been three times, trying different dishes each time. Every time, the food has been of a very high standard and the service attentive.

The decor is drab and they are clearly trying to get by with spending as little as possible on the decor. All the effort and expense goes into the food. Which reminds me - that's just how Chop Chop started out. Good move.

If you like good Japanese food at reasonable prices, go there and eat from the Japanese menu. If you go to restaurants to look at the scenery and admire the wallpaper, go somewhere else.
