Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2013 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the current (2013) edition.

With the same owners as the popular Italian restaurant opposite, it’s part of a cluster of bars along Great Western Road that could form a varied itinerary for a night out. Offering an attractive selection of Northern European beer with a weekly special, it’s the Scottish-brewed Williams Brothers on tap that hits the spot. The pizzas are above average as you might expect – fresh, light and stonebaked they seem to be a popular choice across the tables. The burgers are also a pleasant surprise – juicy, home-made and nicely seasoned while the veggie option is an unusual three lentil-blend which, despite not quite being as visually gastronomic as the description, still disappears quickly. The recent addition of a tapas menu shows a willingness to break away from a tired bar menu routine and they make good appetisers or light bites on an enjoyable night out.

Neighbourhood Watch: Great Western Road, Glasgow

19 Dec 2011

Including The Captain's Rest, The Belle and Lupe Pintos

What’s it like? One big road full of pubs, cafés and little shops. Flats are mostly old tenements above the bars, restaurants and stores which go up most of the road. Where’s it, like? In the West End, a stone’s throw from Woodlands and Byres Road.

Saturday 14/4/2012 ,The weather was bad ! and people outside were no less than grumpy and fed up ! But hey ho inside we got a cheery welcome at the bar from a mixed bunch of guys and girls.

We were going into town and supposed to be just meeting here, but why move ? we were asked if we were dining and shortly after getting a drink from the bar we were shown to a table and then there was no moving us - three happy couples .Great tunes , funky beats and not too loud and we got well fed too, if you want something fancier yeh dig in to your wallet , its a PUB !

Great food , chilled atmosphere with nice staff we will be back.
Oh forgot the hangover on Sunday - must have been a good night :)

Not convinced.
After a couple of visits I have found the place dead most nights and food poor.
Lots of corners cut... especially on the 2 for 1 offer (making it more like 1/2 for 1)
Have a look and make your own mind up... but don't be unduly swayed by the planted advertising language reviews above.

Cosy pub right by Kelvinbridge subway. Pizzas are delicious and good value with a buy one, get one free offer on all day. Menu changes every now again and it's a definate notch above the usual pub grub. There's a massive selection of beers from all over and they're all served in ice cold glasses straight from the freezer (amazing in summer). Noticed they've got a cider in now you can have warm if the cold glasses don't appeal! Staff are young and friendly and the quiz on a Sunday is always a good laugh.

Previously operating as a Beir Halle, Bar Gambrino retains the wide selection of world beirs and now also has the same wine list as Gambrino restaurant across the street.
The food on offer is excellent, for pub grub the steak burger is in a league of its own. Generous portions and reasonably priced considering the west end location. 2 for 1 pizzas are also on offer which is always a favourite.
Table service, huge selection of beirs, a restaurant class of wine on offer and excellent food make this my favourite west end location.
