Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2013 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the current (2013) edition.

A smart, light, bright dining room with a stylish champagne bar attached, the place has an open kitchen where the chefs can be seen preparing dishes from the large menu. Deep-fried calamari are tasty and tender as are the prawns in the same characteristically light batter. The bean and lemon mayo salad accompanying is an odd addition however. Of the mains, the pastas and pizzas are probably the safest bets. Both are substantial and, while not out of the ordinary, are not half bad. The orecchiette mimosa deserves a mention, tasty and large, the quality and quantity of crumbled Italian sausage and pan fried aubergine makes this a hearty dish. For afters, the focaccia coated in chocolate hazelnut spread will undoubtedly sort you out. Not for the faint hearted, this mega pizza surely goes down well with sweet-toothed locals. If you are not from around here, don’t worry, the pizza’s not deep fried.

I note from the above that there is only 1 review in 2012, and I can say my recent experience at Meditterraneo was completely different. I organised our company Christmas Lunch for Friday 14th December and ate off a Christmas menu costing £20.95. All our staff could not have faulted the food, drink and most importantly the staff and everyone had a fantastic time. I did not hear one complaint from our 33 staff and had specfically great reviews on the chargrilled sirloin steak and sea bream fillets.
Most company Christmas lunches / dinners can usually be a hit or a miss and in the past have learned not to expect too much because of the volumes off people at these events, but this year has been totally different. Mario and his staff treated us well from start to finish, food was terrific and the drink flowed. What more could we have asked for?
I will personally be back again and I am sure most of the staff will have a return visit as well.

A friend booked our table, unfortunately, because if I would have seen the place before I wouldn't have set foot in it; pretentious and noisy, cold or rather no atmosphere, and when, in spite of me having asked for my pizza being delivered together with everybody else's starters because I was hungry, it arrived after an hour with the other main dishes, I was just hoping that my hunger would make me enjoy the food anyway; nope - worst pizza I have had in a long time, I left half of it, even though I normally even finish my airline food (I am a big eater!) - Mediterraneo ruined my evening, thanks! (this is by the way the first review I ever wrote for a restaurant...)

I booked Mediterraneo last minute before reading these reviews but to be honest we had a great night, It was a very sunny Saturday but the place was not that busy. The staff were very attentive and friendly, the garlic prawns I had were excellent as was the Pizza (and I am very fussy about my pizzas!). My husbands veal was clearly hand breadcrumbed and was excellent. A good choice of wine and the overall bill was very reasonable. The place was also very child friendly and a famous footballer and his kids were in when we were, so it must be good!

The only reason Mediterraneo is getting one star is for the decor. Had heard mixed reviews about this place before visiting but thought I would make up my own mind as the menu looked quite nice.

The service was appalling, wine was warm, food was either bought in frozen or bland.

Probably one of the worst dining experiences I've ever had and expect everyone else who visits to be seriously disappointed.

Mmmm...Very nice cocktails, however, I ordered seafood first and second courses. Felt that first course King Prawns where frozen not fresh though sauce tasty enough. Second course halibut absolutely smothered in a very bright yellow/mustard coloured sauce. What are they trying to hide? Made the mash potatoes very grey looking in colour. My husband enjoyed his starter of the italian sausage but ound his main course of chicken with pepper sauce rather bland. Probably an ideal place to head for a pizza!!
Would be especially worried if restaurant very busy, what would the quality be like then.
Stick to Guy's, Italian Kitchen or La lanterna if looking for authentic italian cooking.
Personally won't return for food.

Very very average.
Decided to go based on Tam Cowan's review and the review in the list was severely disappointed!

Visited here last night.

My partner really liked the interior of the place. It's very spacious without being too cavernous and you're certainly not elbow to elbow with other diners. Not sure it would be the most suitable place for those interested in an intimate meal.

I had the chicken liver to start and it was very tasty. My only criticisms are that the salad wasn't dressed and the toast was a bit 'flimsy' for using to spread any of the pate on.

For the main course I had pasta with strips of beef in white wine and a tomato sauce. Again, it was good. My partner had Tagliatelle Alla Modenese (pasta with cherry tomatoes, mushrooms, pine-nuts and olive oil with a bit of cream) and she reported that it was very enjoyable.

It's a nice place.
It wasn't too expensive.
The staff were friendly.
I'd go again.
