The 2013 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).
This review is taken from the current (2013) edition.
Variously known as The Indian Lounge, Tipu's Indian Lounge, or Tippoo Sahib (its previous moniker that lingers on menus and framed certificates on the walls), this stalwart of Rose Street has been serving up traditional curries and Punjabi specialities for three decades. A plasma screen in the entrance offers images of the carpeted dining area one level down from the street; it's hard to describe the eating spaces as elaborate, with just a few pictures and ornaments, but the dark wood tables and contemporary chairs are smart and the welcome easy and chatty. Starters include pakora, puri and chutt patt – tandoori barbecued chicken wings – while mains offer a run-through of traditional bhunas, dhansaks and vindaloos along with specials where cream, coconut and milder spicing are employed in dishes such as chicken pasanda or kurum ghutala, a dish with its origins in the Moghul empire.
- High point: Handily placed city-centre curry spot
- Low point: Windowless dining room
- Number of wines sold by the glass: 4
- Private dining: Up to 24 covers
- Provides: Vegetarian options (at least ¼ main courses)
- Music on stereo: Traditional Indian music
- Capacity: 85

i went here on the weekend and was very happy with what i ate and my partner.it was a special occasion as it was my birthday (50th) and i love indian food. we went for the king prawn puri as starter and for main course i had the tandori chichen and my wife went for the lamb sag, we had rice and nan, after that we had coffee but before the coffee came the manager brought out a small cake for my birthday as i believe my wife told him it was my birthday and he even gave us FREE birthday drinks. all in all the food was very good and so was the service.many thanks

me and my wife and son came to this place on a recommendation from our hotel. we were greeted my happy waiters and shown to our table as we looked at the menu the staff were playing with my 5 year old son as it gave us time to look at the menu. we still could not decide and was offered recommendations which we decided to take. we really enjoyed the starters as they were freshly made main course was even better we forgot what we had but do remember that one of the dishes was DESI LAMB which is spicy lamb with Indian spice and mint oh and peshwari nan was very good to. we enjoyed our time here and we will be back soon. many thanks
