Firstly I have dined here three times, one of my favourite meals was a roast pheasant dish. Absolutely beautiful.

However, today it was dire.

French Onion soup should be fresh, topped with toasted french bread and cheese.

It should not be a thick reddish gloop and £5 to boot!

Sorry but something wasn't right, the service was great but the menu didnt inspire (compared to previous visits) and the food - fried stodge - is done better elsewhere.

We have eaten here several times and have always been pleased with the food and service. The staff are friendly and welcoming. The food is delicious and well put together, by someone who knows what he is doing. It is also good value for money. Obviously we will be back!
I do detest paper napkins though!! :0)

This remains a top East Lothian choice. Try the new Sunday carvery; excellent value for £14.95; choice of starters and puddings off a menu then off to the carvery for main course. The sticky toffee pudding won an award; no wonder. This place also likes customers. It is really friendly and welcoming. Oh, and the wine; even the cheapest wines are good.

We are regulars at the Avenue because it is so good in every respect. The menu plays to most tastes and the food is professionally presented. The chef specialises in fish, which is excellent (particularly the Seafood Indulgence for 2 which is superbly cooked and good value) but other dishes are also outstanding. Service is friendly and professional and pricing is sensible. This is a restaurant really worth visiting.

Visited the Avenue and had an out of this world meal experience! Don't agree with previous review. Place, staff and food all well worth a visit. Highly recommended.

This is a nice looking restaurant, the staff are friendly, but the food defies description. Had one good meal here when it was first launched, but two subsequent visits reveal a slide in standards. I hope the List sends its reviewer, but anonymously, as I am not sure the place employs a chef much of the time (our visit was midweek). We shared a seafood platter that was a mismatch of fish in batter, tough prawns, yucky scallops, cold mussels, leathery smoked mackerel piled high on a plate like in a Beano comic. It was as if the ingredients had been reheated from an earlier sitting. We shared the lemon sponge, which was devois of flavour, without a hint of lemon. The whole eating experience was comical (though expensive) and will be turned into a lifetime of anecdotes I'm sure, but we would never go back.
