Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2013 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the current (2013) edition.

Handily placed for the King’s Theatre, Iman’s has a spacious split-level interior, separate dining area for larger parties and curious pebble-dashed walls. Starters include the usual suspects, and both seekh kebab and channa Punjabi poori are decent and come in hearty portions. Among an unusually wide choice of mains are a range of ‘desi’ (traditional) dishes made by the head chef’s mum which can justifiably claim to be unique to the venue. Desi saag paneer is full flavoured and lightly spiced, while the monkfish karahi is a well-executed balancing act where the fish holds its own alongside spices including ginger and coriander. Brinjal aloo is delicious as a side dish and the exceptionally good plain naan is a much better bet than the paratha. Although unlicensed, you can BYOB at no charge and there are also two excellent-value lunch menus, so you should leave both solvent and well fed.

  • High point: Possibly the best naan breads in Edinburgh
  • Low point: The big TV beside the bar seems out of place
  • Delivery: £1 charge, 3 mile radius
  • Private dining: Up to 30 covers
  • Provides: Vegetarian options (at least ¼ main courses), Children's portions, Children's high chairs, Wheelchair access, Free wi-fi
  • Music on stereo: Indian Bollywood soundtracks
  • Capacity: 120
  • Largest group: 150
  • Open since: 2008
  • BYOB: no charge corkage

First things first, the atmosphere was pretty much ruined by the presence of several large television screens showing a foreign language sports channel at annoying volume. The screens seemed to be for the benefit of the staff, as they were the only people watching them.

The service was mediocre at best - the staff were friendly enough, certainly, but they were simply not attentive enough. It seemed to take an eternity for our food to arrive, and the staff were clearly more concerned with flirting with a large, gruesome hen party [the noise from which was vying with the televisions as an appetite suppressant].

The menu raised a few eyebrows, not least the offering of a dish called "Tikka Madras Korma" - sounds like something a first year student would cook up from various jars of sauces, and the rest of the fare seemed bog standard.

Our dishes, when they arrived, were plentiful yet tepid; the flavours were particularly strong and rich - that's the only positive thing I can find to say about them.

We couldn't wait to get out, not least to escape the cackling and hysteria of the hen party, and Asian TV's equivalent of Sky Sports News.

If you place importance on the dining experience, then I definitely wouldn't recommend Iman's to you.

Do not eat here if you want to pay £1.50 for each pompodom! We were tricked as it was not made clear that they charged per pompodom and not by a serving (which every other resturant does about 3 pompodoms for this price). We were horrified when the pompodoms cost more than our mains!!! The fact that they kept on bringing them out and we did not order them, for this price they should be asking first.
Poor service, they did not ask to if we wanted any drinks etc, did not check on how we were enjoying the food and they were annoyed when we asked them to give us a couple of minutes while we decided what we wanted to eat.
Food was nice however based on everything else I would not go back nor would I recommend this resturant to anyone!! I guess a resturant really shows alot when it is empty inside (should of look at the first signs).

Been here a few times before taking in a show at the Kings. Visited wth the family early tonight. Food was yummy, sadly the service was very poor. Uninterested, bored looking young men. I don't think we'll bother going again.

comment #1 removed for what reason, comment #4 TAZ (Mr Tahar the owner) compliments himself about his restaurant and trys to deceive the readers as to how good his restaurant is.This is not a good sign of a business , where the customer is taken for a ride.(google imans and read the reviews you see Taz once again trying to deceive the public by writing his own reviews)Are the other reveiws fabricated also.
The reason for this comment is that i visited the restaurant after reading the other reveiws and found the place to be other than what was written about it.I wasted my money as the food, service and value was awful. After a little reading of more reveiws i realised what the owner was up to.REVIEWS ARE FOR THE PUBLIC TO MAKE !NOT THE OWNERS.

First visit to Imans recently. Loved the food, the atmosphere, the waiters. Definately a repeat visit on the cards in the near future. The friendliness of the place was the highlight of the evening.

Excellent food - tasty. Good selection for veggies. Good prices. Free corkage on BYOB. Service could be a bit faster but not bad.

I am amazed at there not being an abundance of favourable reports on Imans. My Wife, family and many friends have been regular visitors to Imans since it opened in November and have never had cause for complaint. The food is authentic and superb, service is great and the atmosphere pleasantly open. BYOB without corkage is an added bonus and all the food, including "House specials" excellant value. In my opinion Imans is going to be a leading light on the Edinburgh Punjab eating scene.

(+) Cheap and cheerful, BYO, great service, amazing naan bread, would be happy to recommend if you're in the area.
(-) Toilets are freezing, big screen tv very distracting and out of place
