The 2013 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).
This review is taken from the current (2013) edition.
Not far from Haymarket’s busy hub, Morrison Street’s Papoli is a little ray of sunshine. While still retaining its roots in Italian cuisine, in August 2012 it welcomed new management and a slowly evolving shift in emphasis towards a more rounded Mediterranean menu. Albondigas, North African shorba soup, Turkish patlican and baklava now vie with familiar Italian staples and a specials board road-testing new dishes from head chef Mikayel. Partner Rachel runs a convivial front of house across a comfortable room of earthy tones and holiday music, enhanced by daughter Kristina’s sun-drenched mural that immediately spirits you off to warmer climes. A rice-stuffed pepper starter comes drenched in a deeply flavoured tomato sauce longing for some mopping-up bread, arriving alongside some splendid but sparse calamari. Anchovy and king prawn marinara pizza has a reassuringly crispy crust, with lamb and aubergine penne nestling happily among an appealing list of pastas. Set-dinner and pre-theatre deals are great value, even with the appearance of the occasional supplement, all supported by a well-composed and equally well-priced wine list.
- High point: The room, menu and welcome are all bathed in Mediterranean warmth
- Low point: Penne pasta that's a bit beyond al dente
- Number of wines sold by the glass: 8
- Provides: Vegetarian options (at least ¼ main courses), Children's portions, Children's high chairs, Pre-theatre menu
- Music on stereo: Mediterranean holiday tunes
- Capacity: 24
- Largest group: 24
- Open since: 2007
- House wine: £9.90 per bottle

We have had a number of meals and parties over the past few years in Papoli and we have always enjoyed the food and kind service.
It is simple, cosy and genuine :-)

Absolutely not happy one bit. Read many reviews online, all seemed very positive, they were all restaurant-based. After reading them, me and my partner decided to get a takeaway around quarter to nine after seeing it being advertised on snapfax. The man on the phone said it would be around an hour to an hour and 10 minutes, after waiting an hour and 45 minutes and no call saying why it was late/where they were, we were ready to cancel it. We decided to wait another 5 minutes, during that time they arrived. We ordered a pasta, soup and a pizza (which was cold.) which were nice yet the portions were smaller than expected. Using snapfax offered us 50% off, yet it still managed to cost us £19.10 for a pizza, pasta and a soup. I highly doubt that would normally cost £38.20 just for that. After finding out the pizza was cold, and the late service, we decided to phone to explain what we were unhappy about, the man on the phone (very rude I may add) was not apologetic in the slightest, and didn't seem too bothered about our complaints. He offered discount on our next purchase, which we explained why would we come back after having such bad service. We are both not happy and would definitely not recommend getting a delivery from here again.

Just wanted to reiterate all the favorable reviews above. This is a wonderful wee place and well worth seeking out. It is quite small so probably best to book ahead. The menu isn't huge but the starters and mains are wonderful - particularly the shorba soup and the chicken with pancetta and pecorino which is sublime - and everything is excellent value for money. A real gem of a place which you really must try

A friend recommended Papoli and said she had the best Italian food there that she'd ever had. It's a really small place, and looks like more of a cafe than a restaurant, but very clean and well presented.
You can eat pretty cheaply here. I've had the chicken breast with rosemary, pancetta and pecorino so many times now, because it's so solid and full of flavour.
I agree with all the other reviews that Papoli is really welcoming. I think the owner/manager is an absolutely lovely man and always greets and serves everyone warmly.

We have eaten here for over 20 years, firstly as Pizza Primo the best hot and spicy pizza, with extra chillies. in the world! now as a restaurant the food is fresh, local, beautifully cooked and well presented. Farah's mussel linguini is a real treat and her chicken pie is the perfect winter comfort food. Farah and Paris are the most fantastic hosts, we have never felt so welcome anywhere in the world.

We had our staff Christmas meal here last night and had a really great evening. The staff were wonderfully hospitable and everyone had a tasty, perfectly cooked meal with no complaints. The price was really reasonable too.
We are not a loud bunch and were not looking for razmatazz, just a cozy, friendly night out with delicious food, excellent service and that is exactly what we got.

We had a lovely meal here on a Saturday night and would definitely recommend it if you're looking for hearty, home cooked Italian food. It's quite phenomenal value at about £12 for 3 courses.
Some of the food lacks inspiration and there's no attempt to be original or different - but who cares when you can tuck into good food at reasonable prices. The wines by the glass are good too.
All in all - a great local italian with a bit of heart and super cheap prices

I had dinner here on Friday evening with some friends. The meal was ok, I wouldn't rave about it and probably wouldn't return, although I didn't think the food was bad. It was just decidedly average to all of us.
I had coleslaw and a pizza, which was quite tasty, my partner had the steak which he said was fine.
I suppose it was fairly cosy inside and they didn't rush us but something felt missing. It just didn't excite me very much compared to other restaurants in Edinburgh.

Enjoyed dinner at Papoli recently with two friends. We ate from the A La Carte menu with two (extra matured) steaks and the fillet of sea bass for the mains. This was preceded with a shared portion of the tagliatelle carbonara with bruschetta. All were truly excellent. No room for sweet, but the latte I had to finish was the best I had had for ages. For what we had the price was very reasonable. Would have no hesitation in recommending to anyone who fancies italo-mediterannean food in unpretentious surroundings.

I've dined at Papoli quite a few times now with group bookings and have nothing but praise for this lovely little restaurant. Hidden away in Haymarket, its small, cozy and spotless. The service is outstanding, and the food even better. I recommend the Chicken for the main, it's amazing.
Prices are very cheap for the high standard of food and choice, and can easily get a starter and main for £10.00.
Again, a wonderful find! Will most certainly be going back.

Had lunch in Papoli last week, £6.90 for 3 courses, I would have been happy paying double that. Lovely, fresh chicken and noodle soup was a great start. The main of lamb cutlets with tomato pasta was lovely, meat fell of the bone. Best of all was the summer fruit cheesecake, appeared to be homemade. Great little restaurant that deserves to suceed. Offers far better food than most of the "bog standard" Italians in Edinburgh.

I ate at Papoli just last week and can't find anything but good stuff to say about it.
I travel for business and eat alone alot, some places don't make you feel comfortable doing that but Papoli couldn't do enough to ensure I was happy. While I was eating there was a family group celebrating something, and a couple of young guys (students maybe), and they were all made equally welcome. That's the joy of a smallish restaurant, everyone feels special!
The menu is simple but has enough variation that you'll definitely find something to taste. I ate a delicious Chicken Shorba Soup (a light broth with chickpeas and noodles), a scrummy Greek Salad (tasty fresh lemon and olive oil dressing, plenty of olives and feta) and a huge Seeded Flatbread (too much for me alone). With a homemade lemonade and a coffee the bill came to a little over £10 which is unbelievable (in London you get a sandwich and a coffee for that!).
Although I didn't sample any of it this time (I will be back here!), the main courses I saw - and smelled - appeared delicious, especialy the pizzas; which I noticed they are already doing a roaring trade of take-away's in.
Eat here once, and I'm sure that you'll go back again and again!
