The 2013 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).
This review is taken from the current (2013) edition.
Darkly chocolatey Sachertorte, or rum-soaked raisins, nuts and apples piled into paper-thin strudel. Puffy choux pastry layered up with whipped cream, cranberries and rum for a slice of cake-heaven the Konditormeister calls Flockensahnetorte. Nobody needs to try too hard to encourage the customers at this Gullane offshoot of German master-baker Falko’s respected Edinburgh-based bakery. It’s a bright and intimate corner café with dark wood fittings attractively set off with touches of tartan and a rustic scattering of baking paraphernalia. With seats at a premium, the takeaway option for a special picnic or loaf to take home is a bonus. A short menu of savoury brunch and snack items showcases artisan breads, and is supplemented at weekends with a hot dish of the day like pork schnitzel with salad bowl. To drink, there are top-notch loose teas, coffees and authentic hot chocolate, or a wine list featuring a strong selection of Alsace whites by bottle or glass.
