Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2013 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the current (2013) edition.

Bare white walls and quirky 1960s chairs give this café a relaxed feel, but it’s the pop art screen-prints and kitsch lampshades that hint at the bold flavour hidden in the menu’s simple-sounding dishes. Slow-cooked coconut dhal, warm and rich with a perfect blend of turmeric and chilli, sums up their approach: simple food, full of flavour, prepared with care. Their enthusiasm for fresh food, made from scratch, using local suppliers is evident in all dishes, from classics like carrot, ginger and honey soup, to uncompromising New York deli-style sandwiches. The Breaking Bad inspired Polo Loco is such a sandwich: grilled chicken with a heady mix of fresh thyme, chilli, cayenne pepper and lime juice, served with sour cream and guacamole. Staff are friendly and – with a variety of deals, coffee at £1.50, and home-baking by Bella’s Cakes – those looking for a treat will be equally glad they popped in.

Did you know Scott (owner of Café Pop) also caters for businesses, parties, etc? He cooked the most amazing food for 26 of us at a family reunion held 5-8 April at Altskeith House, overlooking Loch Ard in the Trossachs. Everything was prepared freshly in situ; plenty of variety for lunches and dinners and all just delicious. His charges were so reasonable too. We can't recommend him highly enough! THANK YOU, SCOTT from Judith, Marion, Kate and tribe.

Love Cafe Pop. The food is fantastic, especially the Dahl which should be guzzled down by anyone who frequents the place.

The cafe was in a period of transition when this review was written and is now under new management (which I ensure you I am neither part of nor related too!!).

The menu is better, the quality of the food has improved no end, and it remains exceptional value for money.

Don't take my word for it, the food speaks for itself.
