Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2013 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the current (2013) edition.

As its quirky Paul Hodgkiss-designed furniture in thick misshapen chunks of pine clearly signposts, Jelly Hill prides itself on unconventionality. While it serves relatively standard and basic café food from morning until night, this small Hyndland haunt also functions as a local of sorts with a substantial beer and wine list attracting a faithful clutch of drinkers that includes TV and media personalities. With only a small food prep area behind the bar, the menu is mostly restricted to soup, sandwiches, baked potatoes and a selection of sweets and pastries. Platters of fresh cold meats, cheeses and bread make for good sharers, while changing daily specials can include Brussels pâté on toast. A fully-opening frontage and a canopied outdoor area warmed by heat lamps add to a continental vibe, and encourages al fresco eating and drinking almost year round.

Tips for hot spots in the plushest part of the West End

What’s it like? That nice bit between the ‘proper’ West End and Anniesland, with lots of cute coffee shops, restaurants and lovely flats. Think ornate doorways, stained glass and well-pruned window baskets, going for much more than your average…

Something must have changed since I last went into jelly hill - I'd been before a few times and I wasn't overly impressed. It still has the cosy interior (which I love) and you can still sit outside (heated at night) which is great. Coffee= great, food= lovely sandwiches and soups, staff attitude= much better. Haven't been in at night yet, but have been told it's a lovely wine bar. Def going back, damn fine soup!

This place has a unique look inside (tho quite dark if you're trying to read!) and they let you sit outside for ages with a coffee watching the world go by. Even better in the evening with the candles and a glass of lovely vino.

Had an awful ciabatta - chorizo onion and brie. The chorizo was just the thin pre cooked slices you buy in tesco and the ciabatta was so hard i cut the roof of my mouth trying to tackle it. £6 odd for a rubbish experience. could easily do a few sandwiches very well if they made the effort. won't be back.
