Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2013 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the current (2013) edition.

The creative and community spirit of Out of the Blue Arts @ The Drill Hall reveals itself in the quirky and generously portioned dishes offered at the café. Set midway down Leith Walk, this thriving arts venue boasts studio and production space for artists and musicians, as well as ping-pong nights, a monthly flea market and regular acoustic music sessions. At the centre of the renovated army building is the café, which also functions as a catering training scheme for young chefs. The decor harks back to the 1970s with red vinyl chairs and flowered plastic table cloths. Along with a range of soups, sandwiches and tarts produced with an admirable number of locally sourced ingredients, there are a few affordably priced mains. A cheddar-topped fish pie has a succulent filling of white fish, leeks and onions. A side of grilled vegetables dashed with balsamic vinegar also complements a large bowl of penne pasta tossed with chilli, fennel and spicy sausage. Raspberry ripple cake has a sweet cream cheese icing and the coffee is pleasantly strong. This is a place where big-hearted dishes are served in a funky atmosphere.

  • High point: Appealing main dishes for a fiver or less

Apart from the good coffee, tasty bacon rolls, and scrumptious French toast, I go to the Drill Hall because it embodies a feeling of community. This is a place run for the people by the people....

My new second home in Edinburgh.. The food is fantastic for the price you pay, the space is light, friendly and warm and I love what this place stands for! It is a great place for me and my family to relax, and in my experience very child friendly.. sorry kay73 and Lisa anne, your babies must have some lungs on them :)

Had a full scottish brekky last Saturday, put together to my spec (no haggis!) - good plate of grub at very reasonable price, and excellent quality coffee. The regular flea market here is good for a root round too. Interesting spot.

I'm a regular at the drill hall and frequently eat and drink in the cafe (lovely home style comfort food and very reasonable). I just looked up the venue to check a show time and felt that i had to leave a positive review because the two existing don't reflect my experience at all. I like the people, I like the building and even though it gets freezing in winter I don't mind because it is an old drill hall and they haven't messed with that. And the positive is you can get a lovely bowl of hot soup to warm you up.

Visited Drill Hall today with some yummy mummies, pretty fabulous surroundings (still under revonation) art exhibition on etc.
Cafe good, had to wait abit for cappacinno, worth the wait!
Unfortuneatly let down by staff asking one of our mummies to leave with her child as he was crying and making too much noise!
Maybe not as child friendly as we thought? Shame!

I met a group of lovely mummies today at Drill Hall.
We had reason to believe it was child friendly. i beg to differ, i was told by the girl behind the counter to tell my 2 year old son to make less noise or to take him outside and be considerate to the office workers (as he'd started crying after losing his balloon up to the roof of the inside).
I WAS MOST DISGUSTED!!
If places like this have facilities for children, have toy bikes and the like to amuse them, then you have to accept a certain amount of noise.
I have yet to meet a child who can cry quietly.
