The 2013 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).
This review is taken from the 2010 edition.
Within a pizza throw of Hampden stadium, Canasta has become a celebrated restaurant in Glasgow's Mount Florida – an area not known for great dining options. It's cosy inside, with chequered tablecloths and scatter cushions contributing to an informal bistro feel. The kitchen is a part of the dining space, so you can watch flames from the hob as you sip your wine, giving the feeling that you're in a home, rather than a restaurant. Serving staff are incredibly friendly, accommodating every need. There's an inviting and imaginative selection of menus and meal deals. It's more Italian-style with a few eccentric dishes, rather than pure Italian. For antipasto the mini fondue pot comes with succulent meatballs in a rich, creamy parmesan sauce, accompanied by garlic bread to mop up. There's a good selection of fish and seafood for main course. The fish-cakes are crisp on the outside, with soft flakes of potato, pink salmon and strong smoked haddock. Desserts include melting chocolate pudding, a little sweet bomb of delight, served with ice cream. Canasta is a wee gem of a restaurant.

my wife and i went to this restaurant on friday 28th jan at 6pm and it was empty apart from two diners .We were shown to a small table for two and we asked for a larger table which the waitress reluctantly agreed to give us.We sat down and after a while we still had not been asked what we wanted to drink or given a menu. There appeared to be two staff working and both were talking to a lady who appeared to be a friend of theirs. We asked if we could have a drink and the response was,"I will be with you in a minute sir." in a tone which was extremely surly. We got up and left and the short time we were in the restaurant
was a depressing experience and the staff were inattentive.

I live very close to Canasta and have now been 3 or 4 times and each time I leave dissappointed - note to myself don't try again. How it can be described as 'cosy' leaves me utterly astonished, it is quite simply the coldest restaurant I have ever eaten in. I took my Mother on one occassion and we had to move twice because of the draughts from the window on one side and a very strong wind blowingin from the side of the door on the other. I have always found the waiting staff to be rather sullen and unwelcoming and although the menu is large and varied I feel every dish lacks attention to detail, it could probably do with reducing the menu and concentrating on quality. One highlight is the fondue which is not commonly come across in restaurants and was delicious. The main courses however do let the reasonable starters down. Unless you get a seat at the wall I really wouldn't bother as you'll be as uncomforable as unsatisfied with your visit.

Canasta is a friendly, warm place to have a meal with a loved one. I have been there many a time, and found the service second to none. The head Chef Kenny and his lovely wife Debbie, have always made me and my wife welcome, and I regard them as good friends.
The food is delicately balanced, so wonderfully tasty, and very Italian.
I recommend this establishment to any lovers of food, I have traveled many a mile, been to Italy, and other places, you will be well looked after at Canasta.
And BTW, I am Scottish, but live with my beautiful wife here in South Yorkshire. Going home to Scotland is always a visit to Canasta.

I went here with my family for a lunch and the meal was of a very good standard. Its a nice little setting and we all enjoyed what we had.The downside was the front door was open that made it very cold and the only waitress decided to go outside for a fag leaving us waiting for some time to order our desserts.
